How to Prepare Your Family for Long Trips in the Car

With the cost of public transport and the convenience of having your own vehicle close by, many people are choosing to drive to their holiday destinations. However, this can cause its own issues when you have children to consider. Preparing for long trips in the car is never easy but it must be done. Here are some fantastic tips to help you prepare the family for a long trip in the car.

Make Sure There is a Co-Driver

Whether it is your partner or your responsible eldest teenager, it is always a good idea to have a co-driver when planning a long trip. Even if you intend to do most of the driving, you need to make sure that there is someone who can take over if you feel tired.

You need to make sure that you are both on the car’s insurance policy, of course, but adding a named driver doesn’t necessarily have to cost an arm and a leg. In fact, if you visit this link you can compare car insurance quotes from over 100 UK providers, so you might even save money if you’re willing to shop around for a better deal.

Start Early

No-one likes getting up at 3am or 4am if they don’t have to. However, starting your trip on the early side can be incredibly helpful. One of the major advantages is that the kids can just be loaded into the car in their pyjamas and they can sleep for a few more hours. At about 8am, you can stop somewhere, grab some breakfast, and get dressed.

The other advantage of an early start is that the roads will be clear. If you live in a heavily urbanised area, you will be able to get well away before rush hour hits. No getting caught in traffic jams, you can get a significant portion of your journey out the way long before commuters hit the road.

Prep the Car

Ideally, you will want the car to be packed and ready to go the night before the trip; especially if you are choosing to start early. However, you should always do a quick check of the car to make sure that the rest of it is up to scratch. You don’t want it to break down somewhere awkward and get stuck waiting for a mechanic with increasingly grumpy children.

When you are certain that the car is ok, make sure that there are little extras like water and healthy road trip snacks which your children can help themselves to. This means that you can focus on the road instead of being bugged for something to eat while in the middle of the journey.

Pack Things to Do

Eventually, your kids will run out of music they want to listen to and games they want to play. When this happens, you need to make sure that you are ready to swoop in with some other activity for them to do. Although many parents aren’t happy about tablet time, it could be a useful tool here and could keep them occupied for a few hours.

If you would rather limit their time with gadgets, you could instead research the route beforehand and come up with a quiz for them. You might be driving past some well-known landmarks like the Angel of the North and keeping their attention focused instead of wandering.

Long trips in the car might be a little bit daunting at first but they will fly past with the proper prep. Make sure that you do your bit to get your family ready for the journey. Every bit you can do is going to make the journey even easier.
