4 Must-Haves for Your Next Hiking Adventure

Whether you’re headed out on a backcountry trek, mountain skiing, or a casual nature walk in your favorite national park, there are a few basics you should always have on hand.

From the right boots to a roomy day pack, here are the essentials that will help keep you safe and comfortable on your next hiking adventure.

Sturdy and Comfortable Boots

Nothing will ruin a hiking trip faster than wearing the wrong shoes. Naturally, gym shoes won’t cut it and aren’t durable enough for rugged trails. Sandals, even if they’re designed with more than just fashion in mind, don’t provide the ankle support you need for climbing over rocks or conquering steep climbs. Instead, you need a  sturdy, comfortable pair of hiking boots.

Of course, you have plenty of options from which to choose. For backpacking or lengthy day hikes on difficult trails, a heavy-duty pair of water-resistant boots are a must. Conversely, casual hikers might prefer a lower profile boot, with the flexibility and comfort of a tennis shoe. Once you find your perfect pair, be sure to break them in before your hike to avoid painful blisters.

A Weather-Proof Outer Layer

Whether you’re hiking in the desert or on a windy mountain trail, in the heat of the summer or dead of winter, you should always have a weather-proof outer layer on hand. A raincoat makes for a good outer layer when you’re hiking in warmer weather. But if an unexpected storm pops up or you end up on the trail after dark, this layer will keep you warm and protect you from the elements.

In cooler temperatures, a coat that’s waterproof will keep rain and snow from soaking and exposing you to dangerous conditions. You can also opt for a multi-part system, with warm fleece or down layers underneath that zip into a waterproof outer layer.

Wicking Layers

Another hiking essential you’ll need regardless of weather is wicking layers. While your favorite T-shirt or sweatpants might seem like a warm or comfortable choice for a hike, they’re actually the opposite. When it comes to hiking or outdoor adventures, know that  cotton kills. This common hiking adage refers to the fact that cotton retains moisture.

In the summer, this means your sweat is trapped against your body, leaving you sticky and hot. In the winter, you may still sweat under your layers, or your clothes may become damp from rain and snow. If you’re wearing cotton, this moisture will be trapped against your skin. Add in cold air and a chilly breeze and you’ll be shivering in no time.

Instead of cotton, opt for wicking synthetic fabrics. Worn on their own, they’ll keep you cool all summer long. In the winter, wear them as base layers to wick away sweat and help keep you warm and dry under your other layers.

A Roomy Day Pack

Besides these clothing staples, you’ll also need other hiking basics, including a  first-aid kit, water and snacks, for lengthier hikes. This also means you’ll need a day pack to carry everything. When choosing a day pack, there are two important things to consider: space and comfort. Make sure there’s enough room in your bag for your supplies, as well as extra layers when dealing with cold or wet conditions. Your pack should also be comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time or while hiking on uneven or steep surfaces.

Prepping for Your Next Hiking Adventure

Having the right gear on hand can be the difference between a memorable hike and a dangerous experience. From choosing the right pair of hiking boots to opting for wicking fabrics, always having a waterproof outer layer and finding the perfect day pack, this is just some of the essential gear you’ll need for your next hiking adventure.
