Preparing Your Home for Winter 

As the year draws on, and Winter draws closer, it can be good to change some aspects of your home to prepare for colder and wetter weather. Gone are the days that you can spend time outdoors with your family soaking up the sun and leaving windows and doors open.

Considering the climate you live in is important if you want to make the most of winter. You need to figure out how you can stay comfortable, rather than be dragged down with the thought of chilly weather,  and a darker and more drab skyline. 

Make a Boot Tray 

Tracking leaves, dirt, or even snow into your home can create a lot of mess and hassle that you most likely do not want to deal with. Creating a boot tray that the whole family can use can negate this issue. Using simple stones and a tray, or wooden box, can give your boots and shoes somewhere to thoroughly dry off that won’t dirty your floors or other shoes. The stones can then be washed, or put aside to use in the garden.  

Clean Out Gutters 

The gutter is usually attached to roof trims and helps your home dispose of rainwater. Throughout the year, this can become filled and blocked by moss, leaves, and even birds’ nests. To avoid causing any damage to your guttering or roof, it is a good idea to ensure that they are cleaned before Winter. Heavy rainfall and melting snow can cause an overload in weight if the water has nowhere to go. This could potentially lead to structural issues in your home, as well as foundation damage. If you have a basement, this is also how flooding can occur. Hence, it is best to get them cleaned or do it yourself, preferably immediately following the shedding of leaves from any nearby trees. 

Check Your Heating 

While you may not need to use it right now, it is still a good idea to ensure your heating works. If a day comes where you feel the chill within your home and your heating isn’t working, you will still have to wait for any repairs to take place, and emergency callouts can be far more costly. At least if this occurs when you test it now, you will still have plenty of time to get repairs or replacements undertaken before you really need to use it, and you will not need to pay as much for a standard callout and repair fee as you would for an urgent job.  

The arrival of winter is inevitable, but that does not mean you need to spend the time feeling cold and miserable. By making little changes, you can ensure that winter passes with ease and you can enjoy the season more. And if all else fails, book ski holiday!
