Cutting Your Heating Bill the Green Way

The majority of homeowners are interested in keeping their heating bills under control. This makes good financial sense. However, there is another reason to try to cut your fuel bills. Doing so is also good for the planet. We all want our children and grandchildren to grow up still being able to enjoy good food, clean air and the wonders of nature. So, it makes sense to do as much as we can to protect our planet, including cutting our power consumption.

Use good quality heating oil

If you heat your home using oil it is important to only buy good quality fuel like the type you can find here. Buying cheap heating oil from disreputable sources is not a good idea. This fuel does not burn efficiently and causes more pollution. Not to mention the fact that it can also damage your boiler. So, if you use heating oil it is important to buy it from a well-established supplier that has a good reputation. The same advice applies if you use bottled gas.

Get your boiler serviced regularly

A properly serviced boiler will always work more efficiently and produce less pollution. The fact that you will need to use slightly less fuel is also good for the environment.

Insulate your home well

Insulating your home properly will also help you to consume less power or fuel. Keeping as much of the heat you generate inside the home as possible means that you will need to have your heating on less.

Choose insulating materials with good green credentials

When you insulate your home, try to use insulating materials that have good green credentials. Opting to use 100% wool insulation rather than the fibreglass type can make a huge difference to the environment. Far less energy is consumed to make natural wool insulation than is used to make the man-made kind. Plus, when it is time to dispose of it all, the wool will break down naturally without polluting the environment. Use natural draught-proofing products

Draught-proofing your home will also make it easier for you to keep it warm. However, you do need to be careful about the types of materials you use when doing this. For example, a homemade door sausage made out of old fabric is clearly far more environmentally friendly than a plastic strip would be.

Shut the door

Getting everyone to shut the door and turn the lights off is also a great way to reduce your consumption. It may take a while to get the kids to do this, but it is well worth the effort. In most cases, they will carry this good habit through into adulthood.

Consider investing in green forms of heating

If you have not already done so, it is worth investigating the possibility of using alternative power sources in your home. The price of solar panels and wind turbines has started to drop. So, it may now be financially viable for you to have these installed in your home.

Like so many things in life, little changes add up and start to make a big difference. You only have to put a few of these suggestions into effect to start helping the environment and save yourself money.

  1. I think the most important among these is to insulate one’s home properly – which includes shutting the door tightly. It also helps if you cook at home every day, because it really warms the house and, at the same time, lets the family enjoy home-cooked meals.

  2. I’ve been reading a lot about house insulations lately, unfortunately, I don’t have a house to use any of the stuff I learned but I still think it’s important to know 🙂

  3. Great post! We recently bought insulation to pad around our attic door too. It’s these small places which can create drafts and lower the heat!

  4. These are all great tips to reduce the cost of heating. I should have thought about that homemade door sausage made out of old fabric before I spent money for that plastic contraption on my door. I will send this post to my husband so he can check our boiler and gauge how efficient it is to heat up the house, maybe it is time to have it checked too.

  5. These simple steps are great for cutting down heating bills. We should do whatever we can to conserve energy. Our future generations will thank us for this!
