How to Make Your House a Home
What makes a house a home? It’s different for every single person. The most important thing is creating a place you feel relaxed and are proud of showing off. My four beautiful children help to make my house a home, but I thought I’d put this blog together with some ideas on how interior design can make your home feel even more homely!
Incorporate Mementoes
The obvious way is by incorporating mementoes such as photographs, prints and anything else which holds a special place in your heart. Walking through your front door at the end of a long day to be greeted by your favourite things is sure to make you feel warm and fuzzy! Your home tells your personal story, so it’s key to display things which you’ve picked up on your journeys, such as rugs purchased from flea markets or wall art from your travels. My advice would be not to overdo it as you don’t want to over-clutter your space, so be strategic and pick out the most important pieces to you!
Add Textures
Using a variety of textures in your interior design brings the whole look and feel of the room together; by layering these textures, you have the ability to add depth and character. Think about adding clusters of cushions and a throw to your sofa to cuddle up in the evenings or antique collectables for a vintage vibe. If you aren’t looking to completely redesign your room with a lick of paint or new furniture the perfect way to spruce up your room is by bringing in new accessories, which is a cost-effective way to give your décor a refresh!
Craft a Cosy Corner
If your home is on the smaller side and you can’t dedicate a whole room to a cosy space, craft a cosy corner in any room of your house. Your cosy corner can be a place you retreat to when you’ve had a long, stressful day and is the perfect place to unwind and feel at peace. Think about incorporating a cosy chair with a fluffy throw and some candles, and tuck into a good book with a coffee from your coffee machine! Bring the Outside in
Not only does greenery look aesthetically pleasing, but they’ve also got amazing health benefits too. Plants help circulate oxygen around the room and assist with reducing carbon dioxide levels, making them a seamless way to make your house a home. If you aren’t the best at keeping plants alive, you can incorporate artificial plants for the same look without having to remember to water them!
Warm Up With Lighting
Lighting plays a major role in creating the right atmosphere and can determine how you feel when in that specific room. If you want to make your room feel cosy and warm, the best way to achieve this is by incorporating industrial lighting. The amber hue of filament bulbs has the ability to help us unwind and feel relaxed in the evenings as they’re less harsh on our eyes. These tones are best placed in living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms, where we spend more time chilling! When warmed bulbs are paired with vintage lights, they create a stylish and characterful look.
Take it Outside
Children love spending time outside, and the perfect way to enjoy the laughter is by creating a cosy garden. When the sun is shining, there is nothing we like more than heading into our garden and having a BBQ, which is made easier by having one you want to spend time in! My top tips for adding character into your garden are placing some colourful flower beds which the kids can watch grow, a picnic table to enjoy meals at and some good outdoor lighting, so you can enjoy the space throughout the entire year!
The home is the place that memories are created, laughter is had and love resides; it’s a place that feels good to come back to, and that’s the reason you should make it your own!
