Review: Radio Control Ultimate Lightning McQueen
To celebrate the recent release of Cars 3 coming out on DVD, we have been reviewing the amazing Cars 3 1:16 Disney Pixar Radio Control Ultimate Lightning McQueen toy, and let me tell you….Harry was ecstatic!! As a huge fan of Cars, he literally could not get it out of the box fast enough and whilst I genuinely thought that he might spontaneously combust whilst I searched for the batteries to get it started.
The toy takes eight AA batteries which aren’t included, so if you do plan on buying this I really suggest having them ready and waiting, it may save the mother of all meltdowns if you have to dash over to Spar like I did!!
The car itself is just like Lightning McQueen from the movie and is really solid and well made, perfect for the inevitable crashes!! This 3 channel radio controlled Ultimate vehicle also has full movement and is 1:16 scale.
The car is controlled by a chunky controller which has a start button, both up and down, left and right, sounds, brake, smoke, brakes, drifting and donut mode!
I love that the controller is really easy to hold, even for little ones like Harry, and despite the fact there are lots of functions, it’s really quite straight forward to use.
Harry couldn’t wait to familiarise himself with the controller, but once he had he was raring to go!
We loved that the car has a rev up feature, where it starts to shake as it revs and then whizzes off to race! I was surprised just how fast the car actually is! As you’re racing, you can use the drift function to perform shifts and stunts, including doughnut spins.
Harry’s favourite feature is that the car actually smokes, fuelled by a small water tank which you can refill and slot back underneath. When you push down on the smoke button smoke blows out from behind the tyres!
The car also has a variety of sounds, including unique phrases from the movie, and also lights up when in use! We really enjoyed turning off the lights and taking it for a spin in the dark!
At £59.99 this toy isn’t cheap, but a good quality radio control toy never is. I think you get exactly what you pay for with the Disney branding and movie merchandise, as well as a toy which will grow with your child for years to come. Also available in the range is Ultimate Jackson and Ultimate Ramierez meaning you can buy for sibings and get racing!
All four of the children have enjoyed playing with the Ultimate Lightning McQueen remote control car, although none quite as much as Harry. I think we have found a new winner for his favourite toy of the moment.

I always struggle with RC cars because of the amount of batteries, but they’re such a winner with my son I can never resist. Lightning McQueen is a no brainer!

IT sounds like great noisy, colourful fun. The lack of batteries would cause issues on Christmas Day though os thanks for the warning! My kids would love this.
Haha yes, there was a moment of panic as I realised I couldn’t just steal a couple from the remote control like I usually do!
That looks solidly built and like it would last when exposed to the destructive power of small boys. Pretty battery heavy but I suppose that’s life!
Yes the batteries was a bit of a downer but we have rechargeables now to combat that problem! xx

AHHH I love Cars 3 – I almost wrote a blog post about how I felt a little bit like Lightning McQueen (feeling a bit past-it, and not as fast as these younger models!). The remote control sounds amazing, I can’t believe it smokes!!! SUPER cool.

This is going to the top of my daughters Christmas wish list. She is obsessed with Cars and would also combust if she saw this toy. It looks such good quality and amazing that it’s also durable enough to sustain those inevitable crashes. A must for any Cars fan.

My Grandson would absolutely love this. He loves Lightning McQueen, and was aghast when some time ago, I expressed that I didn’t have a clue who or what he was talking about. He promptly told me everything he knew about ‘him’ at ‘lightening speed’ and with more enthusiasm than I’d ever seen! To be honest, I think he was more than a little disgusted that Nan didn’t know who this ‘celebrity’ was, and who my grandson was in awe of. On this occasion I obviously showed my age!
