4 Must Reads For Kids This Summer

This is a collaborative post

As an avid reader myself, nothing makes me happier than seeing my children enjoy books and during the Summer months especially I love nothing more than lounging in the garden or by the pool, each of us with a book, reading together in comfortable silence. I think encouraging your children to read is one of the greatest gifts you can give them going forward and it’s the most incredible way to improve their literacy, expand their imagination and open up a world of possibility at the turn of a page. Finding the right books can sometimes feel tricky, especially as your children grow, but we’ve been enjoying some fun Summer holiday reads from Scholastic and couldn’t wait to share them with you all.

Scholastic have some amazing books spanning every genre, age range and interest but at eight, nine and ten, our children love fun reads full of exciting adventures and there are so many to choose from across the website.

1. Gangsta Granny Strikes Again by David Walliams

Gangsta Granny is one of our children’s favourite reads of all time and so they were delighted to discover the sequel where Ben is slowly getting used to life without his Granny – the notorious jewel thief known as The Black Cat. When world-famous treasures are stolen in the dead of night and the clues all point to The Black Cat, Ben must uncover the mystery of the new thief before he himself is blamed for the thefts!

This book is extraordinarily brilliant, hilariously funny, has you gripped with adventure and is such a welcome reunion with Ben and his family. We absolutely loved it!

2. The Midnight Thief by Sylvia Bishop

On a similar theme, The Midnight Thief is a wonderful adventure story sharing the tale of Freya, an unwilling student at an exclusive boarding school who doesn’t expect anything interesting to happen. When she meets Daniel and Esmie, wildlife-obsessed twins who take her under their wing, she is transported to the wonder of their midnight world. As with every adventure book, disaster strikes and the mysterious Eldrida Dragons priceless artefacts are stolen, but who is the midnight thief?

If your children enjoy moonlight and mayhem then they will adore this book. My girls were engrossed in the story and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!

3. Code Name Bananas by David Walliams

The year is 1940 and as bombs rain down on the city, little Eric forms an extraordinary friendship with a huge gorilla – Gertrude. When the zoo becomes too dangerous Eric must go on an adventure to rescue Gertrude and save the day, but as expected, not everything always goes to plan!

We absolutely loved this book, described as a “Whizz-bang epic adventure” and loved the illustrations inside too. It’s so easy to read, has you laughing out loud and feeling pangs of emotion and as with all David Walliams books, really allows your child to use their imagination.

4. Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian

As Britain stands on the brink of the Second World War, Willie Beech is evacuated and finds himself in the home of Tom Oakley, a grumpy recluse who has lived alone for forty years. Gradually under Toms care Will begins to flourish until his Mother summons him from London and is left to face the prospect of never seeing Mister Tom again.

My girls read it with wide eyes and fast turns of the pages, felt their hearts break at the loss of much loved characters and learn important lessons about true love, family and friendship. They adored it, I still adore it, and if there’s one book you should read this Summer with your children, let it be this.
