Nine great ways to bring your family together

The pace of modern life is hectic and that makes good family time harder to come by. It is for this reason why family days out are so important to maintaining a healthy family unit, getting us out and about, learning about the world around us and working together as the sort of team that all good families are.

There are many family days out you can go on, all suiting a range of budgets, time constraints and what exactly you want to get from them. A trip to a museum can be a great learning experience and give us something to talk about while a trip to the zoo provides a chance to laugh at the cute animals.

Here are nine of the best days out to bring your family together

Go to a museum

Museums are there to show us history and teach us about the world we live in. They are thought-provoking establishments which bring out our inquisitive sides as well being a great learning experience for adults and kids of any ages. After visiting a museum, you’ll have some really interesting things to discuss, whether it be about science, natural history or civilisation and you might even spark an interest in a school subject your kids otherwise find pretty dull. It also has the bonus of being a cheap activity as a lot of museums are now free to enter.

Go to the zoo

The zoo is always a guaranteed winner when it comes to a family day out. Whether it is admiring how cute the meerkats are, laughing at the way penguins walk or being in awe of the sheer power and beauty of a majestic lion, the zoo is a great way to have a short break and connect with nature at the same time. You don’t even need to go to one of the big, famous zoos or safari parks these days as brilliant little wildlife centres have popped up all around the country.

Visit a theme park

Theme parks have something for everyone, whether it be the thrill seeker who wants to ride the corkscrew rollercoaster 30 times in a day or somebody who is happy spinning around gently on the teacups. Whatever your preference, packing the family off for a day at the theme park will bring everyone together as you all experience the fright and adrenaline rush that comes from pushing the human body to the limit together.

Go to an Escape Room

Escape Rooms originated in Asia, becoming big in America and are a great family activity to take part in. Essentially, what a venue like the Cincinnati Escape Room does is lock you in a building and give you a set period of time – normally an hour – to solve a set of mysteries which will allow you to escape from it. Their popularity has seen them spread to this side of the Atlantic with more and more popping up across the United Kingdom and their mixture of problem-solving and teamwork means they are a great day out for all the family.

Visit the seaside

The seaside doesn’t just have to be a summer activity. Sure, it’s great going to the beach and lounging around in the sun but it can be fun in winter too as the wave’s crash into the shore and you walk along the windy promenade. The Great British pier is often open all year round and what better way to have family fun than battling in the arcades before settling down to a fresh fish and chip supper ahead of the journey home?

Go caving

We live in a spectacular country above ground, but it can be even more spectacular underground. That’s a subterranean world that very few of us ever get to see, so why not explore it by going caving? Led by expert guides, you’ll descend through natural caves, tunnels and caverns to see underground lakes and the work of millions of years of erosion deep beneath the soil, with only the head torch attached to your helmet for comfort. The hazardous, almost trapped feeling of being underground will mean that everybody on the expedition has to work together for the common cause of exploration, which means it’s the perfect activity to bring your family together – and it is an experience you’ll end up talking about for years afterwards!

Climb a mountain

Judging by how often she sang about it in The Sound of Music, Maria knew just what a good activity climbing a mountain was. While scaling Everest is a little ambitious for a family activity, there are plenty of hills around the United Kingdom that you can tackle. It’ll take teamwork to keep each other going as the task becomes more difficult, but it will all be worth it when you reach the top of the mountain – quite literally in this case. It’s also a great way to some exercise into you and the blood pumping through the system.

Go on a bike ride

Cycling has never been so accessible – you don’t even need to own a bike to do it anymore, thanks to the number of bike hire schemes that have popped up across the country in cities, towns and even in the middle of the country. It’s a great activity to do as a family, making your way from A to B by nothing but your own pedal power. Who knows – if your kids enjoy it you might even have the next Tour De France winner on your hands!

See a show at the theatre

Frozen has shown that musical entertainment remains as popular among kids as ever. So why not capitalise on that by taking them to see a show live in the flesh? The music, the colour and the characters will all create memories that last a lifetime, as will the magic everyone experiences when they step into a proper theatre for the first time. You could spark a life-long interest in musicals and the theatre, which gives you a readymade family activity to roll out on a more regular basis.
