Where’s the best place to position a TV?

When it comes to buying a TV the decisions are endless. What brand should you go for? Which screen size is best? What technology do you need?  

One consideration that often gets overlooked though, is where exactly is it going to go?  

Okay, so you might know you’re shopping for a TV for the lounge or the kitchen, but have you thought through where it will sit?  

You need to!  

A TV’s positioning can hugely impact your overall choice, influencing the size and style of screen you go for.  

Here we take a look at some of the key things you need to consider…    

TV positioning – what to think about   

• Where will you sit? 

Never mind where the TV goes, the first thought needs to be where will you sit?  

If you have a wall in mind, but the chairs in the room face the opposite way, that’s not going to work.

• How much space do you have?  

The location of your TV goes hand in hand with its size.  

It doesn’t matter how big your ‘dream’ screen is, you’re restricted by the space available. So, if there’s only one location in the room it can go, you need to opt for a screen size that slots into that space.  

Handy hint: remember that ‘screen size’ only refers to the measurement of the screen and doesn’t include the surrounding bezel or frame. So be sure to check the full TV dimensions carefully, to make sure you have enough room.   

• Where’s the light coming from?  

Ceiling lights, lamps, sunlight – any light source can be a frustrating problem and impact the colour and clarity of what you’re trying to watch.  

To avoid this being a problem, take time to consider where your TV will be positioned in relation to windows and lights. And, if possible, aim to avoid your TV being in the direct line of a light source.   

• Where do people walk?  

Light is one annoyance but another factor to influence the location of your TV is the traffic in and out of the room.  

Nothing is more irritating than trying to watch your favourite show and people keep walking in front of the screen. If you can position your TV away from the main room thoroughfare, it will make for more peaceful viewing.     

• Who might be disturbed? 

Noise is another consideration – firstly you want a quiet space where you can hear what you’re trying to watch (for example, a TV right near a noisy tumble dryer seems a bit daft), but equally, you don’t want to disturb others. If you’ve got sensitive neighbours or a sleeping baby in the room next door, avoid locating your TV against a shared wall and aim for the other side of the room if possible.   

• How do you want it to look?   

When it comes to television it’s all about how they look and there are several options.  

You can set the screen on a stand or TV cabinet, which is great for keeping cables tucked out of sight. Or if you’re keen to free up floor space, TVs can be fixed to the wall on a moveable or fixed bracket.
