Making Your Home More Secure
For all families, security is an important consideration. We want to be able to leave our home feeling that when we return everything will be as we left it. Fortunately, keeping your home secure is not difficult. Once you have installed the basic home security equipment, all you need to do is to check and maintain each item, periodically.
Light up your outdoor spaces
Studies show that properties that are well-lit are less of a target for home invaders. You can use LED spotlights from LED Hut to cast light along your boundary fence, which makes it hard for someone to get into your garden without being seen.
It also makes sense to install security floodlights that are fitted with movement sensor. If you have a long wall you may need two lights. The idea is to flood the entire area with light. You should also install them around your shed and garage. They need to be located quite high up the wall. This reduces the chances of them being ripped off the wall or the bulbs being smashed.
Consider installing an alarm
Installing an alarm that alerts you by phone when one of the sensors is triggered can be a good idea. Guard monitored alarms can go a step further and alert local emergency services if you feel the situation calls for it. Whether your alarm is monitored or not, they are now relatively inexpensive to buy and fairly easy to set up. Ideally, you want to have a sensor on every window or door and one in each of the main rooms. That way, if someone breaks a window to get in rather than jimmying it open to avoid triggering the sensor on the window frame the alarm will still go off. This is because the thief will still trip one of the internal sensors.
Invest in some security cameras
Security cameras are also a good deterrent. No home invader wants the police to have pictures of them. Should your alarm be triggered you can easily tap into your camera system and see what is actually happening before calling the police. They are also very useful for keeping an eye on your pets, elderly relatives and teenagers when you are not at home. While you’re at it, this could be a good time to get new security locks for your house especially if fast key cutting is possible close by.
Keep your valuables out of sight
You need to get into the habit of putting expensive items away. It only takes a moment for a thief to walk up to your home and snatch your husband´s expensive mountain bike.
Remember to draw your curtains at night. This ensures that thieves will not be able to see what you have and will find it harder to work out whether you are in or out.
Timers on your lights
If you are not at home, set things up so lights come on at various times during the evening. For example, if you normally make a drink around 8 pm, have your kitchen light turns on around that time when you are out. Provided the light is on for the appropriate amount of time it will look like you are still at home. You can do the same with your bedroom lights. If you use smart switches and lights you can do all of this from your phone. So, if you get delayed in traffic or decide to go out for a meal after a show you can do so without having to worry. This is so useful. We have the Phillips Hue lights and set it on timers for when we are away, but we don’t do half of the other things on this list -oops!

As I live in a big building, I feel rather safe, but if I had a house, I would definitely invest a lot to make it secure. Never thought of timers on the lights!

Really great tips! I am such a worrier, and I pretty much do most of these! I always shut curtains, turn lights on and hide things from view! I don’t like leaving anything remotely valuable downstairs at all! Haha. Better safe than sorry though!

Great tips! we have phiilips hue lights that are always set on a timer and we can adjust the times from our phones so it’s not obvious. We even have it so the lights turn on when we’re close to the house so we don’t have to walk around in the dark

Okay this will sound really weird, but if you use yellow LED lights to brighten up outside… it will also not attract bugs. Weird fact, bugs really can’t see yellow (red works the best, but that doesn’t lighten things up well) so they are not attracted to it and LED lights are cool, so they won’t attract bugs looking for a heat source either.
