5 ways to stay feeling young and healthy as you age

Getting older is a certainty in life. It happens to us all, and although there is no way to turn back the clock in terms of time, there are things you can do that will help you to look and feel more youthful.

Here are 5 ways to stay feeling young and healthy as you age.

Exercise regularly

Even if you have never exercised before, it’s never too late to start. Exercising is good for your heart, joints, and muscles and is also known to boost energy levels. As well as your general well-being, it’s also great for your mental health. When we exercise, our brains release mood-enhancing endorphins, which help to create feelings of positivity and also aid the reduction of stress, anxiety, and in some cases, depression.

Whether you fancy taking up running, trying your hand at yoga, or like the idea of vising your local swimming pool regularly, you won’t regret it. Not only will you feel fitter, but you are also likely to feel younger too.

Daily skincare routine

As we age, our skin produces less collagen and less elastin, which can result in wrinkles and saggy skin. Although you can’t permanently stop this from happening, a good daily skincare routine can help to slow it down a little. Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing each morning and night will keep your skin looking more youthful. For brighter, softer, and more radiant skin, use a skin peel or exfoliator a couple of times a week. They will help to get rid of dead skin cells and allow a new layer of skin to appear.

When choosing a moisturizer, opt for a day cream with a built-in SPF. The sun can do some serious damage to our skin, so protecting it is essential. Using a night cream every evening will help to keep your skin nourished and hydrated throughout the night.

Get a good night’s sleep

When we are tired, eye bags can form and wrinkles can appear more prominent, which doesn’t bode well when trying to look younger.

Not only can a lack of sleep affect how we look, but it can also make us feel more stressed and irritable. That is partly why a regular sleeping pattern is so important, particularly as we get older. If you don’t sleep well, try to train your body into a routine. Avoid drinking caffeine late in the day, and endeavor to go to bed at the same time every night.

When we age, we may suffer from aches and pains more frequently, so if your mattress is fairly old, or you don’t feel it is as supportive as it should be, consider getting a new one. Sleeping with legs elevated also has many benefits and is known to reduce fluid build-up and relieve back and leg pain, so if discomfort or pain is causing a lack of sleep, it’s also worth trying.

Keep your brain active

It’s not just our bodies that we need to keep active, our brains need stimulation too – particularly as we age. Doing brain exercises and performing certain tasks is a great way to keep your brain working and will also help to boost your memory and concentration as you get older.

Puzzles are great for brain stimulation and will help to keep you alert and focussed. Perhaps you have always fancied taking up a hobby or learning a new language but never had the time. Learning a new skill is a great way to improve memory function, can be great fun, and will help to keep you feeling young.

You are what you eat

What you eat plays a massive part in how old you feel. For example, eating lots of bad carbohydrates and refined sugars can make you feel lethargic and can also cause a negative change to your overall mood. Eating a healthy and balanced diet will help to make you feel energized, positive, and will also make you look and feel better.

Drinking water also has many benefits, so try to stay hydrated throughout the day. Not only will it make your skin look better and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but is also known to aid a better night’s sleep and give our bodies a much-needed energy boost. It’s recommended that the average adult drink between 2 to 3 liters of water a day, so if you don’t already do so, now is a great time to start.
