Preparing your garden for Winter

The seasons are changing quickly and, while autumn might be slowly easing in, there’s likely to be a bitter winter coming and your garden might not be ready for it just yet. For that reason, we’re taking a look at what maintenance tasks you should take care of to make sure your garden is kept safe, and some tips on how to make it a more comfortable place to spend time even as the days get colder. Aside from getting your home ready for winter, here are a few tips on getting the garden ready for winter, too.

Don’t stop trimming just yet

Most people assume (and rightfully so) that the growth of all the greenery in the garden is going to slow as the days get colder. That may be true of most. However, trees and bushes continue to grow well into mid-point of autumn. As such, it’s a good idea to keep things trimmed even as you’re getting close to winter. Of course, any winter blooms that you have are going to need a little care, too.

Move some plants indoors

There might be some plants that can tolerate the outside world without too much trouble in the winter. However, not all of them are able to shut down and weather the colder temperatures. This is particularly true of plants from sunnier climates. Learn how to pot your outdoor plants and bring them indoors where they can be safe for now.

Make it a more comfortable place to be

If you’re planning on spending any time dining or relaxing out in the garden during the winter then you had better be sure you have some protection against the elements. A pergola can keep you sheltered from light wind, rain, and even some snow. However, the cold is going to be the biggest enemy so check for fire pits for sale. A fire pit is one of the best ways of keeping the patio warm no matter the weather.

Ensure that you have some lighting

Winter has the added bonus of not only being the coldest collection of days, but also the shortest. As a result, if you don’t want to have to call it an early night when the sun starts to set, you might want to start looking into outdoor lighting, as well. Aside from light that is simply there to improve visibility, bear in mind light’s properties as a safety feature, helping people navigate different levels, steps, and paths. For those for who light is a problem, low light succulents are a great addition to any garden.

Check out the gutters

It might not technically count as the garden, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not important. Gutters can get clogged up by leaves and general garden debris very easily in the autumn. As such, when the rain falls, it gets backed up and can instead start leaking inside. For that reason, it’s a very good idea to clean the gutters before winter sets in.

Take the above tips as just a few starting directions. Take a closer look over your garden and think about whether there’s anything else to be done.
