National Sister Day with Baby Born

When I discovered that I was pregnant, just six months after having Eva, although I would have been happy with a boy or a girl, knowing that the two of them would be so close in age, I was over the moon to discover I was having another little girl. I spent my whole life longing for a sister, someone to play dolls with, share memories, secrets and clothes with, a best friend who would never leave my side, and I can’t tell you how happy I was to know that my girls would share that bond.

From day one it was love at first sight, and as the years have passed and they have morphed into the mirror image of each other, I am in awe of their relationship and the love that they share. It is an absolute honour to watch them together as they grow.

Of course they have their moments, and when they argue, they argue! Despite the fact that they look so alike, when it comes to personality they are very different. And yet where as their likes and dislikes can be very different, the one thing that they both agree on is dolls, and most of the time you will find them in the playroom, cradling their babies, two little Mummies in the making.

So when we were asked to review the Baby Born Big Sister doll in honour of National Sister Day, the girls jumped at the chance. They have so many baby dolls that I’ve lost count and yet nothing quite like this, so when the Big Sister doll arrived they literally could not wait to play with her!

From Zapf Creations, Baby Born Big Sister is a good sized doll with six functions – she has movable arms and legs, can stand on all by herself, has long brushable hair for styling, can drink water, cry real tears and can also be bathed. She also comes with ten accessories – a hair brush, two bobbles, three clips, a sippy cup, shoes and two bracelets.

And let me tell you, my girls love her!!!

With five hair accessories and a hairbrush the girls couldn’t wait to start styling her hair, and I loved that knowing exactly what children are like the instruction book gave tips for keeping the dolls hair nice and soft – fabric softener! Who knew?!

With one doll and two sisters, I did wonder how this would go and yet they took it in turns to play with her and the only argument was over what to call her. Eva wanted to call her Megan and Megan wanted to call her Rainbow Girl….

The girls favourite feature was that the doll cries real tears when you give her water from the sippy cup and squeeze her right arm. I love that this is done without any sound effects, unlike other dolls which have me reaching for the off switch!

I love that the doll is older than their baby dolls and yet the clothes and accessories are still interchangeable with other Baby Born dolls. I love that she can be bathed as many of their other dolls have batteries and we have had countless tantrums when I won’t allow them in the bath!

The girls are so pleased with their new doll and I would recommend it as a lovely addition to any doll collection. Baby Born Big Sister is currently on offer at Very at £39.

In honour of National Sister Day I asked the girls to tell me a few of the reasons why they loved each other and filmed their answers to share with you….

Awe, your girls have a beautiful bond. I never had a sister, all brothers, so I can imagine your happiness when you got to know you’re having another little girl! <3

I was so happy! I have two boys too and they all share such a lovely bond! xx

  2. August 7, 2017 / 6:57 am

You girls are adorable! I have a younger brother, he’s 6 years younger than me so I used to love looking after him when he was little – now the tables have turned quite a bit! I never really wanted a sister, I had my best friend who was pretty much my sibling, we did everything together, we looked alike and we like to tell everyone we were related. But she really did have a sister and when they would fight they fought something chronic, it was scary…kind of put me off! haha

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:30 pm

Haha yes I know friends who fought like cat and dog with their sisters, I still feel like I missed having one, especially now I am older! xx

  3. August 7, 2017 / 7:59 am

Oh my word, that video of them both is absolutely adorable! I love how they shared the doll so well too x

      Ahh thank you Emma. xx

  5. August 7, 2017 / 9:07 am

Aww the bond between your little girls is so clear to see! I always wanted a sister – instead I was lumbered with brothers who weren’t really into the same things I was despite trying to apply make up and girly clothes to my younger bro! I love how your little ones can play along with the same toy so nicely. You are raising such lovely girls that are a major credit to you!

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:24 pm

Hahah I was the same! I had a brother and it just wasn’t the same when it came to dolls and dress up! xx

  6. August 7, 2017 / 9:21 am

thats so sweet, and how amazing is a small age gap? my two older children have 18 months between them and while there are arguments, they love each other and play wonderfully!

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:24 pm

I agree, I never planned it that way. My youngest two have 12 months between them so we are quite a fan of a small age gap! xx

Such a cute little bond they have, they look so happy with their Baby Born too and quite right, it looks fab. There’s a huge age difference (21 years) between me and my little sister so I never really got to have those cute moments with mine x

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:18 pm

Oh wow that’s a huge difference but I’m sure you have a lovely bond in a different way. Sisters are very special. xx

Your girls look like they are twins! No wonder there is such a strong bond between them! The doll is really nice and it’s great that it doesn’t have any sound effects. That would drive me mad as well, haha.

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:16 pm

They are convinced they are twins! They tell everyone they are! It’s a lovely doll, we are so pleased with it. xx

  19. August 7, 2017 / 2:33 pm

Aww your daughters look like they loved it! I never had a Baby Born, but I remember my best friend having one with a sickly cherry scent! Hurray for no sound effects, I always buy my friends kids toys with no noises as I know how annoying it probably is haha!

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:15 pm

Hahah yes, kids toys can be super annoying!! x

  20. Helen
    August 7, 2017 / 3:21 pm

Ellie used to love the Baby Born dolls so she would have loved the big sister doll. It’s great that this one can go in the bath and that it’s quiet too. No more sneaking the batteries out haha.

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:14 pm

Haha yes! The number of dolls I’ve had to tell them the batteries have ran out!! xx

  21. August 7, 2017 / 4:59 pm

Aww such cute photos (as always!) – I loved Baby Born as a child myself and like that they’ve expanded the range so much over the years 🙂

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:14 pm

Me too! They’ve come a long way since then though! xx

  22. August 7, 2017 / 5:24 pm

    • Laura Dove

  23. August 7, 2017 / 6:02 pm

Oh I envy you your sisters, I would have loved a sister! Love and hate! xx

  24. August 7, 2017 / 7:08 pm

Aww how cute are your two girls, I remember having a baby born when I was a child, amazing to know they are still going strong!

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:10 pm

They have so many amazing dolls now, this is their absolute favourite right now, they love her hair! xx

  25. August 7, 2017 / 7:12 pm

They are so cute together! I used to absolutely love baby born when I was a child, I still remember obsessing over changing it’s nappy!

    • Laura Dove
      August 7, 2017 / 8:09 pm

Haha mine are obsessed with changing the nappy!! So cute! xx

  26. August 7, 2017 / 8:38 pm

Hehe they are so crazy together! xx

  27. August 7, 2017 / 8:38 pm

Aw they are so cute! my little girl would have loved a sister I think, she often dresses her younger brother up as a girl ? Lovely photos

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 3:09 pm

Hahah my girls do the same with their little brother! xx

  28. August 7, 2017 / 9:21 pm

Your little girls are adorable. There is only a year between me and my sister and we have always been close. Now we both have a little girl with only 10 months between them. They are really close but boy can they fight. Haha. Both my daughter and niece have a baby born doll which they adore. I’m sure they would love to add this one to their collections. Fab review. X

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 3:08 pm

Ahh that’s so lovely that you both had children close in age too! I think small age gaps are amazing but they do seem to argue more! xx

  29. August 7, 2017 / 10:31 pm

Aw it is so cute that they share such a beautiful bond, they are stunning like their mummy! I like that they got a cute baby born to mark national sister day x

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 3:02 pm

Ahh thank you so much, they are super adorable most of the time! xx

  30. August 8, 2017 / 5:43 am

OMG! Your girl are so cute. I do not have kids but I would want them close in age. I think that it might help them bond together. They seem like they are best of friends.

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 3:00 pm

Ahh thank you Kristal, they are the best of friends….most of the time! xx

  31. August 8, 2017 / 6:25 am

This is gorgeous! You can see the bond they have and it’s one I’ve never had with my own sister who’s 22 months younger than me. I resented her a lot as a child, I think, and we only properly became friends about 4 years ago when she moved in round the corner from me.

I remember having a BabyBorn doll and they’re so different to the ones you can get now x

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 3:00 pm

Ahh I think having a sister must be hard at times as I know friends with sisters felt a lot of comparison and competition, I really hope that my girls never feel resentful to each other. It’s a fab doll, would recommend it! xx

  32. August 8, 2017 / 7:01 am

What a lovely post. I have a sister, though the age difference is close to 5 years so we used to fight. I love her now though

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 2:59 pm

Ahh there are 10 years between my boys and right now their bond is very difference to that of the girls. I think every sibling bond differs according to the age gap or just the stage they are at. xx

    August 8, 2017 / 8:32 am

Awwh how sweet – they are just adorable. I always wanted a sister when I was growing up.

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 2:55 pm

Me too, I had a brother but it just wasn’t the same! xx

  34. August 8, 2017 / 10:10 am

This is just the sweetest! Dolls have changed massively since the days of Tiny Tears ?

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 2:54 pm

Haha yes!! I loved Tiny Tears though! xx

  35. August 8, 2017 / 11:18 am

Thank you, they tell everyone they are twins! xx

  36. August 8, 2017 / 12:07 pm

That’s so nice that your daughters are so close, it must be nice that they’re at the age when they can play together x

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 2:52 pm

Yes it’s lovely that they are always at the same stage and can play together, just hard sometimes when they fight! xx

  37. August 8, 2017 / 12:33 pm

Your girls have a lovely bond and it’s so evident. We love the doll too and is very realistic!

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 2:51 pm

It’s a fab doll, they are enjoying playing with her together. xx

  38. August 8, 2017 / 1:06 pm

Oh, that photo of your daughters is so cute – it’s lovely that they have a strong bond

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 2:51 pm

      Ahh thank you Sally. xx

  39. August 8, 2017 / 1:32 pm

Waaaaaahhh the girls look so cute (and reminds me to put the same top I have on Boo!) This BabyBorn doll looks great – like you said, it’s good that she’s slightly older than the baby dolls but nifty that the clothes fit both.

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 2:51 pm

Yes I love that the clothes fit from the baby dolls too, I love anything that is interchangeable! They are so sweet together…most of the time!! xx

  40. August 8, 2017 / 1:41 pm

What a lovely looking doll and a great sized one at that. It looks like your girls adored her. It’s great having a sister. Mine fight like cat and dog and then the rest of the time are best friends.

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 2:50 pm

Yep same here, when they are good together they are utterly adorable!! xx

  42. August 8, 2017 / 4:52 pm

Looks like they had fun playing with their Baby Born doll too! x

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:29 pm

Thank you Jayne, they are so precious! xx

  43. August 8, 2017 / 5:46 pm

What absolutely lovely words. I grew up with two sisters and always longed for a brother and I now have one little girl and will have two boys once I have my third baby in December. It is amazing what an impact your own childhood has on you as a parent, I can very much relate to you and why you would want that for your children. I absolutely loved growing up with my sisters and like you say it is so special to have someone to share those secrets and special moments with. xx

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:28 pm

I agree, I love giving my children the same childhood as I had. They all go to the same school as I did and we live in the same village, I think that’s a sign of a happy childhood when you want the same for your family. Congratulations on your third baby! xx

  44. August 8, 2017 / 5:56 pm

I have three older brothers and I longer for a sister when I was growing up.
There are 15 months between my two youngest children and it’s lovely that they are so close in age ❤

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:26 pm

It’s a lovely age gap although difficult at the time. There are 12 months between my youngest two so I had a newborn, a one and two year old…and a ten year old, I almost went insane! xx

  45. August 8, 2017 / 6:07 pm

I have a sister and consider myself extremely lucky. We’re very close in age too and my mum used to dress us the same and everything. I love seeing your photos of your girls, they are just adorable!

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:26 pm

Haha yes I do the same, but they insist on it! I’m sure there will come a day they want to dress differently, I’m hoping its not for a while yet! xx

  46. August 8, 2017 / 6:49 pm

Aw how cute! My daughters are the same ages and also have this doll too

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:25 pm

  47. August 8, 2017 / 7:10 pm

Only child here. I always wanted a big brother!!! This doll looks great and you’re girls really do look so similar

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:24 pm

AHh I had a big brother and wanted a sister, I guess you always want what you don’t have! xx

  48. August 8, 2017 / 7:29 pm

Ah we have this doll too (also a review) and the girls just love it! Can I just say though that I thought your girls were twins!! I had no idea- they look so alike! x

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:24 pm

Haha so many people assume they are twins. They are the exact same height, weight and even shoe size! I’m sure they were supposed to be twins! xx

  49. August 8, 2017 / 8:32 pm

How cute are your girls? I have a sister that I’m close too and my girls are extremely close too. The doll oooks great and I’m glad that it doesn’t have sound effects! There have been a fair few ‘lost’ noisy dolls in my house over the years.

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:23 pm

Haha yes, but the kids love the sound effects don’t they? xx

  50. August 8, 2017 / 9:07 pm

Love that your girls share their baby born, my girls would probably have been fighting each other for it! 🙂 Thank you for joining us at #KCACOLS hope you can come back again next time!

    • Laura Dove
      August 8, 2017 / 9:23 pm

Ahh they can be fighting one minute and kissing the next. So far so good with the baby though! xx

  51. August 8, 2017 / 9:57 pm

That doll looks & sounds fab!
B would love one, he has a new found love for dolls, I shall show him…See what he thinks

THAT VIDEO was adorable by the way, I must borrow them two. They make my heart melt <3

      August 9, 2017 / 4:03 pm

Ahh thank you lovely, they are the perfect tonic. xx

  52. August 8, 2017 / 11:12 pm

    • Laura Dove
      August 9, 2017 / 4:02 pm

Haha I know! They noticed that too! xx

  53. August 9, 2017 / 1:02 am

I’ve always been a bit jealous of the sister bond because I haven’t been lucky enough to have one of my own. I’ll pass your post along to our neighbor. She has girls who are just the right age for this super sweet doll! x

    • Laura Dove
      August 9, 2017 / 3:58 pm

Ahh me too, it’s lovely to share that bond with my girls now though. And thank you! xx

  54. August 9, 2017 / 1:38 am

They are so adorable. Had you not said they were not and your eldest was only 8 months old when you got preggers with the second, I would have totally thought they were twins!

    • Laura Dove
      August 9, 2017 / 3:55 pm

Haha yes everyone assumes that they are! xx

    • Laura Dove
      August 9, 2017 / 3:55 pm

Hehe yes everyone assumes that they are twins! xx

  55. August 9, 2017 / 7:26 am

What a lovely bond your girls have, they could be twins! I think my daughter would have loved this doll at a similar age, it’s really different to find a doll that’s not a “baby” and that can cry too (loved my Tiny Tears!) 😀

    • Laura Dove
      August 9, 2017 / 3:53 pm

Yes, I love that this one is an older doll as the only older dolls they have had are Barbies. I loved Tiny Tears too! xx

  56. August 9, 2017 / 8:28 am

You have such beautiful and adorable girls. My sister and I have a five year gap and that caused some tension with most things except for dolls we agreed on that. What a gorgeous looking doll

    • Laura Dove
      August 9, 2017 / 3:52 pm

Ah thank you so much. My girls always agree on their dolls! xx

Aww how cute is that video?! I love their responses haha. I never really had a bond with my sister growing up due to the age gap but we made up for it in later years.

Omg their video is so cute, they’ve got a great bond! The Big Sister doll sounds great, I love that it can go in the bath, would definitely be a bonus for my cousins daughter

My girls have a lovely bond (well, most of the time!) which I adore watching, as my sister and I weren’t friends growing up. I love that they will always have a best friend in one another. Best they had a blast playing with dolly! x

They are adorable Laura! I let her lick my ice cream, brilliant!!!! I too wish I had a sister when I was growing up and I was so excited to find out Holly was going to be a girl and give Alice a sister. There is nothing I love more than watching them together. My girls would just adore this doll, I love that is slightly bigger too x

Haha I know right, the act of true love? As much as I love the bond between my boys, there’s something very special about sisters. xx

Your little girls are absolutely beautiful – I hear you when you talk about the arguing though! I have 3 girls and they can be wicked – Pay back I think for all the arguing I did with my 2 sisters when we were growing up. I wouldn’t be without them though – Sisters are fab! We love our Baby Bjorn doll – She is so robust.

Aww, this looks like such a sweet doll. Oscar has been asking for one and I think this would be perfect as it actually looks a bit like his big sister!!

I feel amazing when we are together as we understand each other without talking 🙂 I thing that having sister is the best thing that happened to me 🙂

Ahh I bet you’re not as old as me though!! Baby Born have the most amazing range of dolls, my girls love them all! You’re so right, having a sister is amazing, I never had one but I see it in the bond between my girls. xx

Oh this is such a cute video!!!!! They are adorable. What a lovely doll and I am quite sad that we will never have dolls in the house. If we did then I would hope it would be one like this. Good tip on keeping the hair soft and nice that it doesn’t make any noise. I must admit we have a battery stealer in our house… no idea where they go!

  70. August 16, 2017 / 6:24 pm

They really do look alike don’t they! And so, so lovely for them to be so close in age and to have such a great bond. The doll sounds amazing too, my daughter is 3 and loves looking after her baby, I think she would love one like this that drinks and cries. Although I’m not sure I’d ever get her out of the bath if she was ever allowed to take it in with her! x #KCACOLS
