National Sister Day with Baby Born

When I discovered that I was pregnant, just six months after having Eva, although I would have been happy with a boy or a girl, knowing that the two of them would be so close in age, I was over the moon to discover I was having another little girl. I spent my whole life longing for a sister, someone to play dolls with, share memories, secrets and clothes with, a best friend who would never leave my side, and I can’t tell you how happy I was to know that my girls would share that bond.

From day one it was love at first sight, and as the years have passed and they have morphed into the mirror image of each other, I am in awe of their relationship and the love that they share. It is an absolute honour to watch them together as they grow.

Of course they have their moments, and when they argue, they argue! Despite the fact that they look so alike, when it comes to personality they are very different. And yet where as their likes and dislikes can be very different, the one thing that they both agree on is dolls, and most of the time you will find them in the playroom, cradling their babies, two little Mummies in the making.

So when we were asked to review the Baby Born Big Sister doll in honour of National Sister Day, the girls jumped at the chance. They have so many baby dolls that I’ve lost count and yet nothing quite like this, so when the Big Sister doll arrived they literally could not wait to play with her!

From Zapf Creations, Baby Born Big Sister is a good sized doll with six functions – she has movable arms and legs, can stand on all by herself, has long brushable hair for styling, can drink water, cry real tears and can also be bathed. She also comes with ten accessories – a hair brush, two bobbles, three clips, a sippy cup, shoes and two bracelets.

And let me tell you, my girls love her!!!

With five hair accessories and a hairbrush the girls couldn’t wait to start styling her hair, and I loved that knowing exactly what children are like the instruction book gave tips for keeping the dolls hair nice and soft – fabric softener! Who knew?!

With one doll and two sisters, I did wonder how this would go and yet they took it in turns to play with her and the only argument was over what to call her. Eva wanted to call her Megan and Megan wanted to call her Rainbow Girl….

The girls favourite feature was that the doll cries real tears when you give her water from the sippy cup and squeeze her right arm. I love that this is done without any sound effects, unlike other dolls which have me reaching for the off switch!

I love that the doll is older than their baby dolls and yet the clothes and accessories are still interchangeable with other Baby Born dolls. I love that she can be bathed as many of their other dolls have batteries and we have had countless tantrums when I won’t allow them in the bath!

The girls are so pleased with their new doll and I would recommend it as a lovely addition to any doll collection. Baby Born Big Sister is currently on offer at Very at £39.

In honour of National Sister Day I asked the girls to tell me a few of the reasons why they loved each other and filmed their answers to share with you….

  1. Awe, your girls have a beautiful bond. I never had a sister, all brothers, so I can imagine your happiness when you got to know you’re having another little girl! <3

  2. You girls are adorable! I have a younger brother, he’s 6 years younger than me so I used to love looking after him when he was little – now the tables have turned quite a bit! I never really wanted a sister, I had my best friend who was pretty much my sibling, we did everything together, we looked alike and we like to tell everyone we were related. But she really did have a sister and when they would fight they fought something chronic, it was scary…kind of put me off! haha

  20. This is gorgeous! You can see the bond they have and it’s one I’ve never had with my own sister who’s 22 months younger than me. I resented her a lot as a child, I think, and we only properly became friends about 4 years ago when she moved in round the corner from me.

I remember having a BabyBorn doll and they’re so different to the ones you can get now x

    1. Ahh I think having a sister must be hard at times as I know friends with sisters felt a lot of comparison and competition, I really hope that my girls never feel resentful to each other. It’s a fab doll, would recommend it! xx

    1. Ahh there are 10 years between my boys and right now their bond is very difference to that of the girls. I think every sibling bond differs according to the age gap or just the stage they are at. xx

  26. What absolutely lovely words. I grew up with two sisters and always longed for a brother and I now have one little girl and will have two boys once I have my third baby in December. It is amazing what an impact your own childhood has on you as a parent, I can very much relate to you and why you would want that for your children. I absolutely loved growing up with my sisters and like you say it is so special to have someone to share those secrets and special moments with. xx

    1. I agree, I love giving my children the same childhood as I had. They all go to the same school as I did and we live in the same village, I think that’s a sign of a happy childhood when you want the same for your family. Congratulations on your third baby! xx

There are 15 months between my two youngest children and it’s lovely that they are so close in age ❤

  35. What a lovely bond your girls have, they could be twins! I think my daughter would have loved this doll at a similar age, it’s really different to find a doll that’s not a “baby” and that can cry too (loved my Tiny Tears!) 😀

    1. Yes, I love that this one is an older doll as the only older dolls they have had are Barbies. I loved Tiny Tears too! xx

  36. You have such beautiful and adorable girls. My sister and I have a five year gap and that caused some tension with most things except for dolls we agreed on that. What a gorgeous looking doll

  37. very nice photos – i think its a great moment and its a cool to have kids where the ages are quite close. bonds will be tight anyway regardless i think you know but its good they can share things as are they are similar age! congrats!!

  38. I have two sisters and my childhood was full of happiness because of them! Your kids are so adorable – they love each other!

I too wish I had a sister when I was growing up and I was so excited to find out Holly was going to be a girl and give Alice a sister. There is nothing I love more than watching them together. My girls would just adore this doll, I love that is slightly bigger too x

    1. Haha I know right, the act of true love? As much as I love the bond between my boys, there’s something very special about sisters. xx

  44. Your little girls are absolutely beautiful – I hear you when you talk about the arguing though! I have 3 girls and they can be wicked – Pay back I think for all the arguing I did with my 2 sisters when we were growing up. I wouldn’t be without them though – Sisters are fab! We love our Baby Bjorn doll – She is so robust.

    1. Haha yes! They definitely pay us back for what we put our own parents through! It’s a great doll, the girls are over the moon with it. xx

Your girls are so cute <3 The remind me, me and my sister. There is a special bond between us – we love to spend time together and travel around the world. I feel amazing when we are together as we understand each other without talking 🙂 I thing that having sister is the best thing that happened to me 🙂

    Best,
    Kasia

  47. Oh this is such a cute video!!!!! They are adorable. What a lovely doll and I am quite sad that we will never have dolls in the house. If we did then I would hope it would be one like this. Good tip on keeping the hair soft and nice that it doesn’t make any noise. I must admit we have a battery stealer in our house… no idea where they go!

  48. They really do look alike don’t they! And so, so lovely for them to be so close in age and to have such a great bond. The doll sounds amazing too, my daughter is 3 and loves looking after her baby, I think she would love one like this that drinks and cries. Although I’m not sure I’d ever get her out of the bath if she was ever allowed to take it in with her! x #KCACOLS
