I have always loved Wales and, over the years, we have enjoyed some amazing holidays down there. We’ve done North Wales, South Wales, and more recently we stayed in Anglesey where I completely and utterly fell in love with the place. Not only is it incredibly beautiful but there is so much to do there for families, and we are looking forward to returning there this Autumn with the children to explore more of, what is fast becoming, our favourite place.

The great thing about Anglesey is that there are so many great places to stay, and the accommodation varies to suit all family sizes and budgets. In the past we have hired a holiday cottage and will no doubt do the same this time.

I’m sharing with you our top 10 things to do in Anglesey.

1. Anglesey Sea Zoo

Anglesey Sea Zoo is a unique aquarium with over 40 tanks displaying the best of British marine wildlife. Don’t expect to see large sharks, tropical fish or sea turtles – instead you’ll find fascinating creatures from around the coasts of the UK, such as octopus, lobsters, seahorses, cuttlefish and catsharks. You’ll also learn about British marine habitats and the research and conservation work which is helping to save them.

2. Beaumaris Castle

Beaumaris Castle on the Island of Anglesey is the great unfinished masterpiece. It was built as one of the ‘iron ring’ of North Wales castles by the English monarch Edward I, to stamp his authority on the Welsh. But it was never finished as money and supplies ran out before the fortifications reached their full height.

Beaumaris is nonetheless an awesome sight, regarded by many as the finest of all the great Edwardian castles in Wales. Begun in 1295, it was also the last. The king’s military architect, the brilliant James of St George, brought all his experience and inspiration to bear when building this castle, the biggest and most ambitious venture he ever undertook. It is now open to the public and is well worth a visit!

3. Pili Palas Nature World

A day out at Pili Palas can be a magical experience for all the family – whatever the weather! With a steamy environment full of lush vegetation and waterfalls with LIVE tropical butterflies flying all, there is so much to see and do. From meeting the birds in the birdhouse, getting up close and personal with snakes and lizards, and attending the “Meet Our Animals” sessions, it’s no wonder this is one of Angleseys most popular attractions.

There are also meerkats, donkeys, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as a nature trail where you can see alpacas and play on the huge adventure playground before finishing off with a bite to eat in the cafe.

4. Foel Farm Park

Foel Farm Park near Brynsiencyn is a fantastic family day out to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a real working farm. All visitors are invited to meet, touch and feed the animals.

There are tractor & trailer and quad bike & mini-trailer rides, pony rides, chances to feed and meet the farm animals, plus a cafe and bistro bar, gift shop and even a chocolate workshop to enjoy!

5. Puffin Island Pleasure Cruise

Puffin Island Pleasure Cruise from Beaumaris Pier, is a very popular pleasure cruise that provides stunning panoramic views of Pennon lighthouse, Puffin Island, and the Snowdonia Mountain Range.

The cruise lasts for around 1 hour 15 minutes, and offers the chance to see the large range of local bird life in their natural habitats. When you arrive at Puffin Island, also known as Ynys Seiriol (St. Seiriol’s Island, named after a 6th century monk), you can expect to see at least 12 different species of sea bird, including kittiwakes, guillemots, cormorants, and of course, puffins!
