The Ultimate Guide to Baby Must Haves

Having a new baby can be such an overwhelming time, especially when it’s your first, and I know I felt completely clueless as to what I would need in those first few months with such huge selections of products to choose from! Having had five children and tried many baby products over the years, I am often asked what I would recommend for new parents and so I thought I would share a guide to some of our favourites as well as some of the newer products on the market which would have made my life a lot easier as a new parent!

For sleeping….

The one thing I will always stand by is that buying sleeping bags for our children was the best thing we ever did and with a ten year age gap between my first and fifth, I noticed a huge difference in how they settled at night with a sleeping bag as opposed to using blankets as was recommended when I had Lewis. There are countless sleeping bags on the market but I recommend starting out with two so you always have a spare for the inevitable 4am projectile vomit, and also a variety of thickness for different seasons.

HALO SleepSack Sleeping Bag 0.5 TOG

The SleepSack Sleeping Bag from Halo, available in three sizes from 0-18 months comes in at an affordable £20.99 in a choice of two gorgeous designs. Trusted and beloved by American parents for over 25 years, HALO® has arrived in Europe and has both safety and comfort in mind. As the number 1 choice of over 1,700 US hospitals, this baby sleeping bag with sleeveless design is baby soft, features an inverted zip for easy nappy changes, has a roomy design as recognised by Hip Dysplasia Institute as promoting healthy hip development and has the signature “Back is Best” embroidery as a reminder to place your baby on their back to sleep.

Bloomsbury Mill Grey Stars Organic Cotton Sleeping bag 2.5 tog

For a slightly warmer sleeping bag at 2.5 tog, Bloomsbury Mill have a gorgeous range of affordable sleeping bags including this Grey Stars Organic Cotton Sleeping Bag. Featuring their classic star print in a neutral grey, the sleeping bag is perfect for all seasons and ideal room temperatures of 16-20 degrees. Made from 100% organic cotton muslin to aid breathability, a chemical free finish for ultimate softness and complying with the highest level of safety testing, it’s a great option when choosing your first baby sleeping bag. Priced at just £13.99 it’s even machine washable which we all know is a real bonus!

You all know how much I love rainbows and the SnuzPouch Sleeping Bag in rainbow would have been my first choice of design for our own little rainbow babies I’m sure. Available in sizes 0-18 months, and in 1-2.5 tog, the SnuzPouch is not only gorgeous to look at but they are made from super soft cotton and British Safety tested so you can be sure you are putting your baby down as safely as possible. With a clever Nappy Change zip making those night time changes even easier, and scooping Silver in the Made For Mums Awards, SnuzPouch are perfect for all year round and definitely one to check out! Prices range from £29.95-£34.95.

NapNap Mat

As we all know, babies sleep a lot in those first few weeks and yet not always when you’d like them to at night! Ours preferred day time naps amongst the hustle and bustle of a busy household and that’s why the NapNap Mat is a great investment for any nap time! NapNap mats are an innovative smart mattress designed to help your baby fall asleep quicker. They use white noise and gentle vibrations to recreate the feeling of being in the womb and can help establish a great nap routine too!

Lightweight and portable you can use them in costs, bassinets, prams, or just by themselves just about anywhere! It has six modes of vibration to get the perfect sensations for your baby depending on just how much or how little they need to get some sleep! With a removable 300 thread count 100% Egyptian cotton cover it’s both practical and stylish to look at and with rechargeable batteries via USB cable a two hour charge can last up to 15 days! Amazing! Priced at £120 this is an invention I wish they had come up with years ago! It would have made my life SO much easier!

Aden & Anais Silky Soft Dream Blanket

I absolutely adore Aden & Anais, their products are so beautiful and unique with delicate fabrics to suit even the smallest of babies. I love the Aden & Anais Silky Soft Dream Blankets, featuring four layers of luxurious viscose made from bamboo which is so incredibly soft I would sleep on it if I could! Pre-washed, although machine washable, you can use it from day one and I have been told by friends that they wash like a dream! Not only are they great for nap time and cuddling, but they make the perfect surface for play time, tummy time and using out and about too. Priced at £59.96 they are an amazing investment to grow with your child and a lovely keepsake when they are older too.

Aden & Anais Muslins

For those who choose not to use sleeping bags, and many do, swaddling using Aden & Anais muslins can be a really great alternative. Available as a pack of three, in the most stunning designs, the silky soft muslins are 100% viscose made from bamboo with breathablity to stop your little one over heating. Again they are pre-washed so you can use them from the get go and they also double up as burping bib cloths, nursing covers and more. RRP £42.

Bloomsbury Mill Cellular Blankets

We also love the Bloomsbury Mill Cellular Blankets, available as a pack of two and a real essential when it comes to a new baby. Priced at just £10.99 they are perfect for their cot or use in the pram and are designed to keep baby cool in summer and warm in winter. Each twin pack is crafter from pure organic cotton and available in a choice of five colours to suit all decors. Machine washable, measuring 75 x 95, they are a real must have and a really great price for the quality!

Ewan Deluxe

Ewan the Sheep is at the top of all of my friends wish lists when it comes to their babies and now with the new Ewan Deluxe I can completely see why! Expertly designed to help little ones sleep, Ewan Deluxe mimics the comfort of the womb with a soft pink glow and a selection of soothing ‘pink noise’ including an actual recording of a heartbeat and womb. The Deluxe version even features an intelligent smartCRY sensor designed to automatically activate when baby stirs in the night helping to resettle them meaning that hopefully, you don’t have to! Priced at £39.99 I am told that it is worth every penny, ten times over, and I’m sure it would have made a huge difference to us when our were small and simply did not sleep!

Clothing…

I worried a lot about how many clothes to buy when I was pregnant with our children, wondering how many outfits a day they would go through, how many layers they would need dependent on the weather, and would I run out if they were sick as often as people told me they can be! Having made the mistake of buying countless outfits with my first, by the time our fifth came around I knew that they lived in babygros the majority of the time at first and it was simply a case of choosing a few special outfits amongst the basics to see them through the first few months. There are so many gorgeous baby clothing brands out there, starting with some of my favourites.

Frugi

Frugi have got the most beautiful, brightest range of baby clothes with some really fun and unique designs which are completely unisex. I adore the new Mushroom Town Gift Set which not only makes a perfect gift but a great starter outfit for your little one. Priced at just £25 the set includes a double layered cosy feet long sleeved babygrow, with clever fold back scratch mittens, a short sleeved body suit with an envelope neck line for easy changing, and a Mushroom Town knotted hat which is the perfect finishing touch! It even comes in a little cotton bag with the same design too! All Frugi baby clothing is made from GOTS certified organic cotton making it perfect for sensitive new baby skin.

Rachel Riley London

I was recently introduced to the Rachel Riley London collection and let me tell you, it is ADORABLE!!! I love Rachel Riley, her whole range is stunning but this Bunny Babygro may well be the sweetest outfit I’ve ever come across! Soft and snuggly, the cotton babygro has an exclusive grey bunny print on ivory with their signature peter pan collar trimmed with grey picot. Available in sizes 1-12 months, it is incredibly soft, completely adorable, and priced at £39 a gorgeous addition to your little ones wardrobe!

Magnet Mouse

Magnet Mouse London are another amazing baby range with 100% pure cotton babygrows like this Grey Cotton Onesie with Liberty Star Pockets. With hidden magnetic fasteners for quick and easy changes, a gentle snap allows the babygrow to practically self fasten, and then a piped Peter Pan collar for that gorgeous stylish feel. Proudly made in the UK and available in unisex gentle colours, the babygrows come beautifully presented and would make a lovely gift! RRP £27.50.

Pop My Way

Pop My Way have a fantastic range of sleepsuits and I love the two way zippers making changing time far easier! I can’t tell you the number of times I struggled to fasten those poppers in the dark at 2am! The two way zippered sleepsuits are available in seven gorgeous pastel colours, have hand and feet flaps to protect your little one from scratches, and have poppers on the shoulders to allow Pop My Way bibs, peter pan collars and toys and dummies to be attached (not included) which is such a great idea!! Made from 100% GOTS certified organic pima cotton, they are soft and durable and priced at £34.

Mori

I am a little bit obsessed with Mori at the minute having bought several items for friends who have recently given birth. I just love the uniqueness of the designs, the softness of the fabrics and how they offer something a little different to high street brands. This Panda Kimono Cardigan and Leggings Outfit is made from their signature soft fabric with the most gorgeous panda design. With a wrap front and poppers on the cardigan, and an elasticated waistband for the perfect fit leggings, it’s available in sizes 0-3 years and such a gorgeous little outfit for boys and girls. RRP £40.50.

For feeding….

The method you choose to feed your baby is a very personal choice, I know I was intent on breastfeeding mine and yet two of my four were solely bottle fed for various reasons. Considering babies have nothing but milk for the first few months I was surprised that I needed anything other than bottles and a steriliser and yet there were various things which were a real must!

Medela Harmony Flex Breast Pump

The new Medela Harmony Flex Manual breast pump is a single manual hand breast pump with the new Flex breast shields providing more comfort and expressing more milk. Light and discreet it’s perfect for taking on the go so you can pump anywhere and anytime! It also has a two phase expression to stimulate baby sucking behaviour at the breast which is one of the only manual breast pumps to offer this. Plus it’s easy to clean which is a real bonus as trust me, when you have a baby, there’s enough to clean up after! RRP £24.99.

Insultatez

Once your baby starts weaning I recommend the Insulatez combo bag which a complete revelation and unlike many insulated bags we have tried in the past, keeps the cool stuff cool and the warm stuff warm – at the same time!  Each bag has a 6 litre capacity, 3 external elasticated storage pockets and a hidden pocket inside, as well as spare warming and cooling pouches with each bag. With a handy foam separator between the warm side and the cool side (removable should you wish to use it for solely warming or cooling purposes), it’s so versatile and a real must for feeding on the go. Alongside that you can get the  Itsy Silicone Snack & Store Trays which are so versatile taking you from those baby weaning says to old children’s snack time. Both items cost just £22 and are such a handy addition as a parent!

Nappies

Again nappies are a real personal choice and whilst many choose to use reusables these days, many more choose disposables. There are some great products out there to help you whatever your decision and you may even choose to combine the two and use some of each!

Kit & Kin Nappies

If you’re looking for natural, safe and eco-friendly disposables then Kit & Kin is the go to brand. The most accredited eco nappy on the market, they are made using even more sustainable and plant based materials which are known to be kind on your babies skin but also on our planet. With unrivalled eco credentials, they’re also extremely effective at keeping your baby’s skin soft and dry with a unique flash dry layer to absorb wetness and offer 12-hour leak protection without sagging. Not only that, but for every 10 nappy subscriptions, Kit & Kin purchases and protects 1 acre of precious rainforest which is an amazing thing to do and I have huge respect for their brand. RRP: £8

Teething….

When it comes to teething life can be pretty miserable for your baby and that’s why I always recommend investing in a good teether toy alongside a recommended teething gel (we swore by Ashton & Parsons teething powder). There are some great teething toys on the market these days which definitely do help!

mini Mizzie the Kangaroo

mini Mizzie the Kangaroo teether is a fantastic teething toy made of 100% natural rubber making it safe for your little one to chew on and soothe their sore gums, naturally! mini Mizzie is perfect for travelling, using in the pram, at home and is great at developing your baby’s senses such as sight, touch and smell. It’s made using non-toxic dyes, has no squeak or hole, is suitable from birth and at just £14.99 is an affordable solution to teething troubles!

Playtime….

When it comes to playtime babies don’t need a lot but it’s a good idea to get a few toys as they grow! Babies love bright colours and sounds, as well as textures too, so it’s good to choose a selection to stimulate then even from a young age.

Cheeky Chick Rattle

The Cheeky Chick Rattle from Taf Toys is a great first toy for little ones suitable from birth. It’s easy to grab, plenty of chewing options, has fascinating rattle movements and sound and is a really sweet design too! Priced at just £6 it’s a lovely little toy!

Hunny Bunny Stacker

As they grow, the Hunny Bunny Stacker (suitable from 9 months) is a fun and colourful toy with a friendly bunny character from the Taf Toys North Pole Collection. It has four colourful rings with the bunny on top with each ring easy to grab and play with as well as rattling swirling beads for sensory developement. Priced at £12.99 it’s a fun toy which they can grow with!

moKee Cloud Playmat

We are huge fans of moKee here and have had some great products from them over the years. I find them amazing quality and they really do last the years. The moKee Baby Playmat Cloud is a great addition to playtime giving a soft base for baby to enjoy tummy time or play with their toys. Made of cotton jersey with polyester filling, it’s machine washable (bonus!) and whilst comfortable for your baby, it’s the perfect thickness for them to still move around on the floor. I love the cloud design and how it can be used in various ways, even as a nursery accessory for a neutral decor. Priced at £69 it’s a great addition to the moKee play gym too!

For safety….

When it comes to your baby their safety is paramount and as much as we used our baby monitors throughout, we did also rely heavily on indoor cameras which, although not specific baby products, were a godsend!

EZVIZ C1C 1080p Indoor Camera

Using the EZVIZ C1C 1080p Indoor Camera is a great way to monitor your baby during the day or as an extra visual at night and one which can really grow with your family over the years. We still use ours now to see what our dog Oscar gets up to when we aren’t home! The Eviz camera links to the Eviz app so you can see, hear and speak through the app whether you are at home or away! It has motion detection alerts which will trigger a notification to your smartphone as well as being Amazon Alexa and Google Hub compatible too.

It’s super easy to set up, you can manage and view your camera live via the easy to install app, and even store footage from the camera via a MicroSD card up to 256GB. It’s completely unobtrusive in your home in a sleek white and black design and with a RRP of £39.99 the camera is a great, and affordable, alternative to specifically designed baby cameras and yet with amazing technology and handy features!

For cleaning….

When it comes to a new baby you’re going to spend a lot of time cleaning and asking yourself how something so small can create so much washing! I feel like I spent the first few months disinfecting my house in a panic and then the moment they could move it was fun and games chasing them around and trying to baby-proof our home! There are some great cleaning products out there which are completely baby-friendly as well as some starter sets so you have everything you need in one go.

Nimble New Parents Gift Set

The Nimble New Parents Gift Set is a great starter pack full of cleaning essentials for a baby ready home. Inside you’ll find the Laundry Lover non-bio liquid detergent full of plant based ingredients making it tough on skin and gentle on stains. There’s the Cuddle Lover – a plant based fabric softener without any chemical nasties, the Milk Buster – a unique plant based bottle cleaner removing milk fat and protein from plastic, working on both breast and forumula milk. There’s the Sticky Stopper – a versatile bleach free antibacterial surface cleaner killing 99.9% of all germs, and the Nappy Lover – a cloth nappy non-bio powder detergent to target those tough stains without the need for chemicals. Lastly there’s the Magic wand – a bottle brush designed to reach every nook and cranny leaving bottles and breast pumps sparkling clean! All that for just £30!

Skincare….

Skincare is so important when it comes to your baby, for them and also for new Mums too! It can feel overwhelming choosing which skincare brand to pick from but important that you find the right one for your baby.

Little Butterfly London

Little Butterfly London has an incredible range of products for both Mum and baby but this Journey of Discovery Skincare set is the perfect starter kit! Containing five of their best-selling organic certified baby skincare products in convenient, travel-fit sizes, it comes in a gorgeous gift set making it a lovely gift or a treat for yourself! The set contains:

1 x  100ml bubbles in the breeze – top to toe wash that gently cleanses body and hair, while also creating a delicate foaming bath.
1 x  100ml dewdrops at dawn – body lotion that delivers deep nourishment, hydration and soothing ingredients to calm delicate skin.
1 x  12.5ml wrapped in love – baby face cream that deeply nurtures and shields from harmful environmental pollutants.
1 x   10ml  love eternal – baby massage oil that soothes the skin, promotes relaxation and encourages peaceful sleep.
3 x   3ml  soft as moonlight – nappy change cream that relieves discomfort and promotes healing.

Priced at £43 it’s a great set and one which I definitely recommend!

Out and about….

Getting out and about with your baby is important for both of you, I know I walked for miles in those early days just to get them to sleep and, as much as they enjoyed being in their prams, I found my baby carriers a god send especially with my first. There are such a huge range of baby carriers these days and it’s all about what works best for you, I had a combination of stretchy wraps with front facing carriers and all had a real purpose for different situations.

Imzi Baby Wrap

The Imzi Baby Wrap from Cheeky Rascals is a great starter wrap, suitable from newborn (5lb) and gives you complete carrying freedom. It’s flexible, adaptable and supports your baby in a snug and yet breathable fashion. Made from natural bamboo fibres the Imzi wrap is makes sure your baby stays the right temperature, keeps your baby close and your hands free, and weight is evenly distributed making it a great wrap for parents too. You can use it in two positions – front carry or hip carry – and both are easily achieved via the instruction manual as well as instructed videos you can find on the website. I found once I had mastered the wrap it was super easy and so convenient to throw on and off on our day to day errands. Priced at £50 it’s a fantastic choice for those who wish to venture into the world of baby wearing.

Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier Move

For a more traditional carrier the Baby Bjorn Baby Carrier Move is a great choice and comes in an ergonomic, user-friendly, flexible design in a soft 3D mesh. It’s easy to take on and take off, even when your baby is sleeping, and is great for those with an active lifestyle with comfort for both baby and wearer! Suitable from newborn right up to 15 months of age, the seat area and head rest is adjustable so it can grow with your child and be used in both inward facing and outward facing carry positions.

Designed with medical specialists to make sure the carriers hold your baby in the perfect position, ensuring free air passages, movement for their arms and legs, and good support for their head and neck, it’s hugely reassuring that your baby will be safe, comfortable and the material soft and gentle against their skin. We absolutely loved our Baby Bjorn carrier and used it with all three of our little ones. From a design perspective I love that they come in a range of colours, can be adjusted so that both parents can wear them regardless of size difference and they are machine washable which is a real must when it comes to baby products! Priced at £130 it’s a great investment which will see you through 15 months with your baby (and possibly again if like me you have more than one child!).

Naturally part of the fun of having a baby is preparing for their arrival and I’m sure we’ve all had those moments when we’ve gone a little overboard with adorable outfits and one too many blankets, but I hope this guide has been helpful for those looking for recommendations. I would love to do it all over again and get to try some of the newer items for myself, perhaps in years to come I’ll be sharing a similar list for the grandchildren!
