Why You Should Consider an Alternative to a Family SUV

SUVs have risen in popularity greatly across the past few years. In 2017 SUV sales grew by 12 per cent globally, much higher than the overall vehicle industry which only grew by three per cent, demonstrating a significant rise in demand for SUVs. It has become a popular option for many drivers thanks to the size, practicality, wider options on the market and lower costs, in some cases.  

Nowhere is this more evident than for families, where each of these points has made an SUV a great family vehicle. However, there are many alternatives out there, from a hatchback to estate or saloon, worth considering as your next car for various reasons.     

More Economical 

While the price of a brand-new SUV has come down quite a lot in the past few years, they’re still usually a lot more expensive in the first place compared to other styles. Not only that, but again, even though improvements have been made, the majority of SUVs aren’t particularly economical to run.  

This is mainly due to their large engines accommodating the greater size. Unless you opt for a hybrid model, a hatchback or smaller car in many instances will deliver a greater fuel economy. Easier to Park 

An SUV is great for doing the school run, loading in all your weekly groceries alongside the kids and packing up to head off on holiday. However, for those who live in the city or use their family car at work as well, its large size can be a problem when it comes to parking.  

Even though many new models will include advanced technology such as parking sensors and a rear camera, sometimes it can be just too difficult to fit into those tight spots. If you can get away with a slightly smaller boot then switching to a hatchback will make parking easier, along with driving down those tight country roads.   

Driving Experience 

Let’s face it, unless you live out in the country and take your SUV for a spin off-road, they’re not the most enjoyable vehicles to drive. Sure, you might enjoy being sat up high and feel like king or queen of the road, but behind the wheel of a smoother saloon or nippy city car will be a lot more fun. 

If you really love to drive, then you’d be far better choosing an executive saloon that has the stylish looks matched with the power. Or even a reliable hatchback that is smooth on the roads will do the job.
