Top Tips for Decorating Your Living Room

Whilst the kitchen has taken over the living room as the most used room in the home, your living room is an area that needs to feel welcoming and relaxing at all times. There’s a certain atmosphere that you want to capture within your living room, one that makes you feel really at home and comfortable from the moment you enter the room, and these top décor tips will help you to design a space that achieves just that.

The Layout

Before you decide on which furniture pieces you’re going to invest in and the colours you want to work with, you need to figure out the right layout for the room. This step is really important and it’s beneficial to do it first for a number of reasons. Not only will knowing where certain furniture pieces are going to go, help you to figure out how much space you have to work with, but it will also help you to work out how to decorate the room too. Once you know the layout you want to go with, you can start to plan the next stages and eventually the whole process will tie together perfectly. If you’re unsure on which layout is going to work best, try to imagine how you’ll use the room, for example, you won’t want the television to be in a position where the sunlight from the window will affect your view, just like you’ll want the sofa to be in a spacious spot accompanied by a coffee table and so on.

Furniture Decisions

In order to create a living room that is perfect for winding down and relaxing in, you need to get the right balance when it comes to the furniture pieces. When it comes to living room furniture, there are a select few pieces that are compulsory in most homes, including the sofa, coffee table and a few lamps. Once you’ve decided on the core furniture pieces, you can start to look at additional items that will help to draw the room together nicely. It’s important to keep space in mind when you’re making your furniture decisions, as it’s always beneficial to make the most of the space you have and avoiding over-crowding the space, as this will result in a cramped, negative feel. If you’re keen to utilise the space you have properly, you can look at bold furniture pieces such as an oak corner tv unit or a sideboard that has plenty of shelf and drawer space for essential items to be stored safely and discreetly. Having a good balance of essential furniture pieces throughout your living room will instantly make the room feel inviting and comfortable, whilst providing you with plenty of seating space and storage space to provide for your family.

Soft Lighting

Dependant on the natural light that flows through your living room, you need to think about the lighting you’re going to introduce properly before you make any purchases. The lighting in your living room is an essential factor in the atmosphere, which is why it’s so important to get it right. Whilst you spend most of your time in the living room sat back watching some television or reading a good book, there may be times when you need bright lighting to make it much clearer for you. With this in mind, it’s really beneficial to have a couple of different lighting options to accommodate to your needs. Your main lighting fixture within the living room can be a bright bulb that illuminates the whole room, with some smaller lamps on the side table or windowsill to add a softer, ambient lighting in the evenings. If you have plenty of natural lighting from the windows, then you may not need to worry about having more than one main lighting fixture, as one may be enough to light the room efficiently.

  1. The right lighting is really important. I love natural light and love how light our house is but our living room still seems a tad dark in the evening as we only ever have a lamp on and not the main light. I keep trying to convince the Mr that we need a new light!

  2. I really want to totally redo our living room, it’s sadly, at the ‘dark side’ of the house and I want to make it as light as I can with the decor and some better lighting.
