Some Ideas for Celebrating the Life of Your Lost Baby

There aren’t many things in life more difficult than losing a baby. It’s natural to feel lost, hurt and depressed, but there are some ways to celebrate them.

For some people, celebrating the life of your lost baby can be a really helpful coping mechanism. Flipping the table in this way could be just what you need to come to terms with such trauma.

This, along with other practices such as filing baby death claims for negligent medical care, can make the years ahead a lot easier. This can help you to afford the support you need to cope with this loss, and the future ahead.

In this post, we’re going to help you celebrate the life of your lost baby by giving you our best ideas on how to go about it.

What Can You Do to Celebrate the Life of Your Lost Baby?

There are lots of things you can do to celebrate the life of your lost baby. These are some of our favourites but, if none of them feel right for you, there are plenty more ideas out there.

1. Buy a piece of memorial jewellery

It’s down to you which type of jewellery you choose to memorialise your child with. It could be something completely innocuous that you decide is a memorial to your baby or it could be something specially made.

There are actually pieces of jewellery out there specifically designed for parents who have lost a baby. You can buy a necklace that has your baby’s heartbeat engraved on it or you can have necklaces made out of your breastmilk, placenta, baby’s hair or ashes.

2. Get a weighted teddy bear

Another option for owning something that reminds you of your child is to buy a weighted teddy bear that weighs the same as your baby.

These bears are extremely useful for parents who have just lost their child, especially the mother who is able to hold the bear in her arms and go to sleep with it until they come to terms with the loss of their child.

Once the initial grieving period has ended, the bear serves as an excellent memorial to your lost child.

3. Do a sponsored walk or marathon

If buying jewellery or a teddy bear isn’t the idea for you, and you’d rather get out there and do something physical to commemorate your lost child, you could take part in a sponsored walk or marathon.

To really make it a celebration, you could sign up with friends or members of your family and have t-shirts made for the event. Walking or running your heart out for your baby and raising money for parents going through the same thing is a great way to celebrate their life.

4. Donate to a charity in their name

Not everyone is able to, or even wants to, do a sponsored walk or marathon, but that doesn’t stop you from donating to a charity.

Charities such as Sands, The Lily Mae Foundation and SiMBA do a lot of great work with parents who have lost their babies. From memory boxes to support groups, these charities are a great way to cherish your child’s life.

5. Get a tattoo

When it comes to long-lasting memorials, it doesn’t get much more permanent than a tattoo. Tattoos are a sure-fire way to make sure you celebrate their life every day and never forget them.

You could get a tattoo of your baby’s footprints, heartbeat, or even a word or symbol that reminds you of your bond.

6. Plant a flower or tree

If you’re in the market for a permanent memorial for your child and you’d rather it not be on your body, you could always plant a tree in their name.

Watching a tree grow in place of them is a very moving celebration of their life and incomparable to other memorials for a lot of parents. It’s also something you can visit that feels more like a celebration of life than a grave in a cemetery.

7. Do a balloon or butterfly release

If permanence isn’t your thing, and you’d rather celebrate the life of your lost child with a short and beautiful act, you could release balloons or butterflies. Releasing these is such an amazing sight that will stick in your mind, forever reminding you of your child’s life.

8. Write letters to your baby

This idea is something often suggested by grievance counsellors. Writing to your baby after you lose them can help you get everything you want to say to them off your chest.

However, considering grieving for your child is something you’ll likely do for the rest of your life, writing a letter at least once a year could make a huge difference.

9. Celebrate on their birthday, due date or Christmas

Funnily enough, a great way to celebrate the life of your child is to have a celebration. You could throw a small family celebration on their birthday or due date and hang up a stocking for them at Christmas.

These celebrations are also a great opportunity to let out your feelings about the loss around friends and family who truly care about you.
