How the Right Clothes Can Set You Up for Success

People judge others by the way they dress, and proverbs echoing this fact continue to be passed on from one generation to another for good reason. However, the way you dress not only plays a role in how others develop their perceptions of you; it’s also a factor in how you view and carry yourself. This, in turn, can affect your interactions in ways that may be hard to notice.

In short, people’s impressions of you can significantly impact whether you can achieve your goals in certain aspects of your life. Here’s a list of how the clothes you wear can affect your chances of success in your day-to-day, professional, and personal activities:

Dressing Up Well Can Make You Feel More Confident

People who make an effort to look presentable are often seen with heightened respect. This view is not just limited to the people around them; it’s also apparent in the person who decided to dress up for the occasion or activity.

Let’s say you’re going to the gym for the first time in a long while. This is an activity that can make a positive impact on your health, so it’s definitely worth doing. Understandably, though, many people can feel awkward exercising while in the company of other, more experienced gymgoers.

Fortunately, you can improve your confidence by preparing well for this activity and dressing the part of a regular gymgoer. Heading out to the gym with your workout getup will remind you of your mission and help you feel that you belong even if it’s your first time visiting the facility.

To start, you can buy tights and other gym apparel that feel good to use and suit your aesthetic. Doing so can help you focus on the task that you need to accomplish—which is exercising—rather than worrying about what other people think about your appearance.

Your Appearance Affects Others’ Impression of You

While we’re taught never to judge a book by its cover, the truth is that people still gauge others by the way they look. If a person’s appearance is the only clue most people have regarding that individual’s background, then a person who’s dressed well can be traditionally perceived as someone who’s from a position of power. This also means they’re more likely to be treated with respect and deference by the people surrounding them.

If you want to make a good first impression, dressing well will do the trick. This is why a lot of people make every effort to be presentable during their job interviews, among many other important business events. They want the people they’re meeting with to form a good impression of them and to see them as someone who will have no trouble fitting in with the company culture.

Dressing Up Well Can Help You Pay Attention to Detail

To dress up well, you need to pay attention to the pieces that make up your ensemble. It’s important to be critical to more than just the quality of the fabric and the make and fit of the clothes that you’re wearing. You must also scrutinize all the small details that make up your appearance. So, take great care to check if all of your clothes’ buttons and zippers, the shoes and bag that you’ll pair with your getup, and your hairstyle all look impeccable.

Do this often enough, and this short focusing practice can turn into an everyday ritual. You may not realize it, but carefully checking your clothes and appearance can train you to exercise the same level of attention and mindfulness as you complete your tasks at work or in your personal life. With the right amount of focus, you have better chances of completing high-quality work efficiently.

The practice of being a mindful dresser doesn’t just keep you focused on the minor details; it can also help you see the bigger picture, if that’s what you need. For instance, let’s say you’re a business owner or a person who holds a high position in a company. If you consider yourself as someone who shouldn’t be sweating the small stuff, then you can pay attention to the overall impression of your ensemble instead of the minor details. Doing so practices your abstract thinking, and this can help you set up a big-picture perspective as you tackle the day’s challenges.

Looking Good Can Help You Negotiate for More Money

A study completed at Yale in 2014 discovered that clothes play a significant role in buying and selling activities. The study, which featured a mock negotiation, had three groups of participants: one that dressed poorly, another that dressed neutrally, and a group that dressed well.

In the end, the theoretical average profit of those who wore nicer clothes was higher than those who dressed neutrally. Additionally, these two groups each earned significantly more than those who dressed poorly.

The study also revealed that the poorly dressed participants showed deference to the nicer dressed participants. The members of the latter group were also less likely to back down during negotiations. These results only highlight the impact of dressing up well as an integral part of one’s effort to achieve success.

How Do You Dress Up for Success?

Dressing up for success involves being aware of the conventions in the event or place that you’ll be going to. You need to dress with intent so that you can look the part of someone who knows exactly what they’re doing.

At the same time, though, dressing up for success means knowing yourself well. This involves getting a good idea of the colors and cuts that suit you, the accessories that complement your preferred style, and the features that you should highlight. Once you know these details, you can start building a wardrobe that will make it easier for you to look good and presentable even if you don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to your appearance each day.

It takes a bit of time getting used to dressing up for success, and it can take longer to build a wardrobe that’s designed for this specific purpose. Once you turn this into a habit, though, you’ll be able to dress well with minimal effort.
