Working From Home: 6 Essential Tips to Maintain Work-Life Balance
Working from home is the new normal. What was previously considered a lifestyle choice has turned into a necessity for all of us. Whether we are working from home, working remotely, or working in a traditional office setting, work-life balance is something that we all strive to achieve. Put simply, it’s about balancing out the time spent working with the time you spend enjoying everything else in life.
Having a work-life balance comes with time, careful thoughts, and lots of planning. If you’re reading this article, it seems like you’re struggling to juggle work time and home-time, while trying to avoid from-home burnout. Don’t worry, these six tips for finding your work-life balance while working from home can help.
Have a (work-free) morning routine
You may have noticed the struggle of working from home by now – your day probably starts with reading emails and ends with reading emails. One simple way to help you achieve work-life balance is to start your day doing the things you love before working. Having a proper morning routine allows you to mentally and physically prepare yourself to ease into work.
A few things that have been a part of my morning routine are making lattes with my coffee machine, doing a short morning yoga session, and having a morning walk outside. Morning routines differ from person to person, so remember to have a routine that caters to your hobbies and interests.
Have a designated home office
When working from home, your home becomes your office, and vice versa; thus, I personally believe that we all should have separate spaces for working and playing. However, a home office might not necessarily be a separate room for working. Whether it’s a corner of your living room or bedroom, a home office can be a designated space where you can focus on work without any distraction.
Since it’s a home office area, you should only use the space for work-related activities. To achieve work-life balance, force yourself not to go near the home office on the weekends and your days off. This way, you can split up how your workdays and weekends feel mentally.
Plan a remote work schedule
Working from home gives you all the time you have, which means your workdays will never end. That’s why having a work schedule when working from home is super important to force you to shut off and “disconnect” from work.
Make yourself a rigid work schedule and force yourself to follow it. Go to work, have a break, and shut down your laptop when the schedule tells you to. Remember that working from home gives us a lot of freedom, as well as the autonomy to create our own schedules and follow them.
Develop a no-work policy on the weekends
As we mentioned before, the key to work-life balance is to separate work from your daily life. You can’t be productive if there’s no time to recharge, and the weekend is the perfect time to take a rest and relax. Having a few days off work isn’t lazy or productive, it’s actively boosting your physical and mental wellbeing.
Remember that the weekend is your time, so be sure to think about the things that bring you joy! You can spend a day trying out new recipes, café hopping, or just doing nothing. This is a golden time to invest in your hobbies that bring you so much energy for the upcoming week.
Remember to socialize
The biggest bummer of working remotely is the physical separation from you and your colleagues. It becomes more challenging for us to talk and connect without being in the same room. But remember that bonding is a part of every job and that effective teamwork is built upon meaningful connection and trust. Therefore, as we’re working from home, we should continue to network and foster our relationships.
Combat this by talking to your colleagues a few times a day. Have a coffee break or lunch break together, catch up on each other’s lives, discuss the favorite shows that you’re watching, and so on! These little reactions go a long way in helping you maintain a work-life balance when working from home.
Let go of perfectionism
When we think of work-life balance, we always think of having an extremely productive day at work and leaving early to spend the rest of the day with family and friends. While this may seem ideal, it’s not always possible. Some days you might want to focus more on work, while other days you might have more time to have a rest and relax. That’s totally normal. So, take things slowly, be realistic and be kind to yourself.
Conclusion
We all lead different lives and have our own commitments as well as priorities. So, how we tackle our work-life balance depends on different aspects of our lives. I hope that the suggestions above can help you find the most suitable way to maintain and improve your work-life balance.
