Planning a family trip to Hong Kong

We had so many lovely travel plans for the year which have understandably been cancelled as we face a global pandemic, and whilst it’s not what we had planned, it’s always better to be safe at home than putting our families at risk. So whilst we’ve had a few moments of disappointment, and whilst we’ve longed for sunny days and beautiful beaches, we’ve also decided to look for the positives, remind ourselves that these time’s won’t last forever, and make plans for next year when the world will still be out there waiting for us to see it.

With Gaz facing 40 at the end of next year we wanted to take a trip we will always remember and somewhere Gaz has been desperate to visit for as long as I have known him, is Hong Kong. Planning a trip like this can take a lot of time and research, and given we have no plans for the next few months, it felt like the perfect time to start doing just that. I am often asked how we plan our trips and the starting point for me is always the following four pointers.

When will we go?

When visiting another continent it’s important to familiarise yourself with their climate, particularly in countries where there can be extreme weather conditions such as typhoons, monsoons and tornados. In Hong Kong the weather is usually very warm from May through to September, with temperatures averaging 33 degrees. The coolest times are from mid December through to February where temperatures can drop to as low as 10 degrees. The wettest month is August, and the driest January, with May to September the most turbulent in terms of typhoons and thunderstorms.

Bearing all this in mind it makes sense for us to visit in the October,  when the weather is cooling down but still enjoyable, and the chance of rain or typhoons is low. It also ties in nicely with the children’s half term holidays.

How will will we travel?

As is always the case, direct flights from the UK to Hong Kong are always going to be far more expensive than those with stop overs. With six of us travelling, it makes sense to choose an indirect flight to save a significant amount of money which we can then spend elsewhere during the trip. With stop overs at Abu Dhabi we could save a lot of money!

Once in Hong Kong we would like to see as much of it as possible and Bookaway.com have some fantastic deals on travelling via ferry, bus and train. I love that we can book these tickets on line prior to our trips which really helps when it comes to budgeting.

Where will we stay?

Choosing where to stay is an important decision, especially when travelling with children and wanting to know their safety is paramount. I always recommend looking via a reputable website with good customer service and a refund policy should you run into difficulties. Hong Kong has some incredible hotels, many of which are renown for being family friendly, and reading as many reviews as possible is important when making your choice.

So for now I will be spending the next few weeks researching, researching, and researching some more so that hopefully, when all of this is over, we can look forward to our next big adventure.
