Five Things to Declutter After Moving to a New Home

We all wish to upgrade our lives and move to a better home. Still, as exciting as it might sound, there is an excruciating moving shifting process involved.

With all the unpacking, shifting tasks, and the pressure of adjusting to a new place, one suffers endlessly. On top of that, if you have too many belongings, the process becomes more painful. Luckily, you can solve your problems by opting to declutter.

The following list will help you start the process. Keep in mind that decluttering is the best technique to get rid of extra things.

1. Extra Furniture and Décor

The first thing to cater to is all the unused furniture in your home. It could be anything from old chairs to worn-out tables, anything that could ruin your property’s aesthetic appeal. Often, individuals fail to throw away old chairs, cushions, and tables, choosing instead to keep them stored away in rooms or the garage. Well, no matter how long you store them, if they haven’t come in use till now, there’s hardly any chance they will help you in the future.

Therefore, start removing unnecessary furniture pieces from your life and home. The same goes for decoration pieces that have lost their touch. Begin picking out useless things from your storage boxes and remove them as soon as possible.

This work might seem a bit exhausting, so there’s no harm in hiring professional home organizers to help manage the process.

2. Unused or Old Clothing

Since you’re moving to a new place, why not give your life a fresh perspective? And the best way to do that is by removing all your old clothes from your wardrobe. Now that you’re starting a life in a new house with new cupboards, don’t repeat your mistakes.

Before placing clothes inside wardrobes, sort them out and give away pieces not in use. Before stuffing anything inside, ask yourself whether you need it. If not, pack them up into boxes. Do the same for your partner’s and your kid’s clothes.

It saves space and lets you have organized cupboards. With fewer clothes to manage, you can set up your wardrobes quickly.

3. Bedding and Linens

Some might think that having extra goods is an advantage, but when you start unpacking and arranging them in your new home, it becomes a nightmare.

With a massive amount of bedding and linens, you have little storage space for other items in your home. So, motivate yourself to donate a few pieces from your collection. Hold onto only those bedspreads, towels, and linens needed for everyday use and guest situations.

The process can be a little tough, given your emotional attachment to some of the linens in your home, but it saves you from making extra effort. By discarding a few extra sheets, you effectively save space and won’t have to invest in new storage options.

 4. Kitchen Goods

Kitchen cabinets can also store several empty jars, old pans, and broken machinery, which are of no use in your new home. This means they should be discarded.

Don’t make the mistake of filling your new home’s kitchen cabinets with useless items. If some machines are broken, throw them out instead of keeping them inside. The same goes for old pots and pans that have no advantage.

Try setting up your new kitchen with a fresh perspective. It might seem a little strenuous to get rid of a few things that you are used to seeing around, but it’s necessary.

5. Old Books and Magazines

Another thing that would need to be decluttered is your old books. Several people fail to get rid of old books, magazines, and newspapers, which ultimately end up in a spare room’s cupboard. Honestly, there’s no harm in having a book collection, but that doesn’t mean you start hoarding books and magazines. You need a proper place and a purpose to have them in your life. So, if they’ve been lying in your storage rooms for a long time, it’s better to give them to someone.

Gather all your old magazines, newspapers, and books in one place and divide them. Sort them into three piles: those no longer needed, those to be donated, and those of use. After a clear division, you’ll only have the ones worth keeping. In case you can’t decide which ones to give away, follow the one-year rule, which is to discard any book not read for over a year.

Conclusion

Moving to a new home requires effort, and having an unnecessary collection of clothes, furniture, and other items could put you in a difficult situation. Therefore, opt to declutter after you have arrived at your place. Through timely decluttering, you save your time and energy.

It’s necessary to understand that your hoarding tendency will never bring any benefits. As you move to your new home, take a new perspective and limit the number of items you own.
