Snowy days and sausage rolls
I hate the snow. I hate being cold, I hate being wet and I hate the inevitable sludge in my boots, frostbite in my fingers and windburn across my face. But like most children waking up around England this morning, my four were absolutely ecstatic to discover a spattering of snow and the prospect of….sledging!!!
So began a frantic search of the shed and the garage for the sledges that we haven’t had a need for in several years, but with no avail. After ringing around several supermarkets and a quick dash up to Asda by my Mum, we got our hands on the last three sledges and while the children argued over who got which colour sledge, I bundled myself up in four layers of clothing and braced myself for the worst.
When it snows here in Chorley, there is only one place to go and that’s Rivington. The whole of Chorley seems to flock there, adults, kids, dogs, plastic sledges, all trailing up to the top in search of the best slopes and the fastest runs. The snow is always deepest there, soft, fluffy snow, unlike the sludge in the garden or on the streets. Whilst Lewis has seen snow much deeper in the past, the youngest three have no memory of snow and have certainly never played in it until now. They couldn’t wait to jump in there and make “balls of snow” and build snowmen which they promptly named Olaf, of course!

And after a slippery walk to the top, and much whinging from the children, we made it up to the steeper hills which are perfect for sledging. Whilst Lewis hit the highest slopes, we introduced the girls to sledging for the very first time. And they loved it!!!

Their little faces, bright red with the cold, were absolutely priceless, as they whizzed down the slopes with such fierce abandon, “Watch out! Here I come!!”. Their little legs took them up and down, back and forth, over and over until their hands were blue and their noses streaming. And even when Megan began to cry and tell me, “Me really want a sausage roll now!!”, Eva kept on going, chasing after Lewis, laughing and screaming with delight.

And when Harry finally got a turn, safely cuddled up on Daddy’s knee, his eyes almost popped out of his head. “Again, again!!!”, he screamed as they got to the bottom, laughing with excitement as they began the climb back to the top.

And despite the fact that I was cold and wet and shivering, I felt so incredibly warm inside. Because these are the memories that mean so much, that the children will remember for years to come and that will make me smile when the children are grown. I will never forget the look on their faces, the sound of their laughter and the relentless whine of my funny little Meggy asking for a sausage roll…….

Ahh all this snow! We got NONE! Lovely post though of what sounds like a happy day. Hope Megan got her sausage roll in the end x
We never get snow so it was a pleasant change to the usual rain! And nope, no sausage roll sadly….but she did get a hot chocolate!!! Xxx
Oh I am so jealous of your snow fun, we haven’t had any for years but I can so relate to that warm feeling inside after frolicing around with the family inthe snow, such a fun way to bond and enjoy family time and so refreshing to go back inside after with tingling fingers and toes. Lovely photos. If you get a chance do join me for Country Kids it’s a linky for outdoor fun. Popping by from #MarvMondays
We rarely get snow so it was so lovely seeing the youngest threes reactions to it! Off to look at your link now, thank you so much! xx
Thanks so much for finding me, love all your snow fun, hopefully I’ll have a post like this before the winter is through!
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!!! Xxx
Lovely photos. We had a little snow too and it’s the best with kids isn’t it. Well done for finding somewhere with deeper snow. We made do with the garden but I’ll look for somewhere better next time. #countrykids
It was a bit of a trek, more so with three of the four wanting carrying part the way, but it was worth the climb for the snow!! We barely get any in our part of the country (Lancashire) so when we do we have to make the most of it! Thanks for reading! Xx
Same here. It becomes black slush in seconds. I think getting the snow on sunday was perfect for us because we had the time to enjoy it.
we just got our first snowfall of the year also. It was a day where I had a ton of stuff to do, but none of it ended up getting done. We broke out the new sled instead
At least you were prepared!! Hope you had a lovely day!!! Xx
I am with you. Being cold and wet is not really my idea of fun but seeing the kids faces having the time of their lives is worth every uncomfortable second. I am so jealous as we haven’t had any snow here yet. Fab photos too x
The being cold bit was just as awful as I remembered but the hot chocolate afterwards was well worth it! Sending some snow your way!!! Xx
Lovely pictures, I follow you on Instagram and was a little bit jealous with your snow pictures we had no snow just wet miserable rain. I only want it on a Saturday or Sunday though (choosy I know) when we can play and warm up afterwards. No snowy school run please!
Haha yes I’m the same! Only like snow on a weekend where as my eldest prays for snow on a school day so that there’s the chance school might be closed!!! xx
awwww what a lovely post. It looks like you all had a really lovely day and sometimes it is worth putting up with the freezing cold weather to make some, amazing lovely memories that you will always treasure #countrykids
Thank you! Yes we had a fab time, despite the freezing cold!! Thanks for reading! Xx
We live in Ontario, Canada so we know ALL about snow. Thankfully we have a small hill in our back yard that suits our three year old just fine to go up and down on so we don’t have to venture too far to get our sledding in. Thanks for your post as it is a great reminder that every moment counts to our children and that we need to be present. Speaking of which, I’m off to go shovel and go sledding! See you around! 😉 #abitofeverything

Thank you! And congratulations again, over the moon for you! ?xx
We went sledging last weekend too, it was so much fun! As you said, these are the days we will remember #ABitOfEverything
Glad you got to enjoy the snow! Raining now and our sledges are redundant! Xx
Same here! Well no rain but no sledges! Xx
Ah, snow! I wish we had some here too! Looks like they had a wonderful time and made some lovely memories. Thanks for sharing with #abitofeverything
It had all gone by the next day. Just rain again now! Thanks for reading. Xz
So, so sweet! We had a couple of decent inches of snow, but definitely not enough to go sledging in! Its so lovely that the children got to enjoy that, and that you managed to capture some great pictures of it too. What fabulous memories for you all 🙂 Thanks for linking up to #MarvMondays. Emily
We’ve had nothing since, but it was nice while it lasted!! Thank you for reading! Xx
Great photos. Think Daddy looks just as happy as the kids! I used to love sledging as a child but not sure whether I would do it now. I tend to spot the dangers of things nowadays rather than just going with the flow. Motherhood has changed me 🙂 hope we get some here. Love, love, love the sound of snow beneath my feet. #AnythingGoes
I am exactly the same!! I’m scared of so much more than I ever was and my heart was in my mouth the whole time the kids were sledging! I hope you get some snow, enjoy it if you do! Thanks for reading. Xx
Awwww such a beautiful post and lovely photos. Such a magical day out in the snow, I can see why it made you feel so warm inside. I am so jealous of your snow. I’m glad you managed to find a sledge. It looks like you’ve made some beautiful family memories. Thank you for sharing your adventure on #whatevertheweather x
Thank you! We did have a lovely day, haven’t seen a single flake of snow since but even if it was the only snow we see this winter, we made the most of it! Thanks for reading. Xx
It sounds like you had a fabulous day, but I still think your bonkers, snow should be avoided at all costs!!
Thanks for linking up, Tracey xx #abitofeverything
Haha we don’t get snow very often Tracey, not even once a year, so when it comes we have to make the most of it!! Xx
Aww… she is such the sweetest! A sausage roll – who ever thought of packing up a sausage roll while go sledging! So adorable! Glad you had a great time – even though it must have been freezing for you! x #Whatevertheweather
Hehe thank you, Meggy is ALWAYS thinking about her belly!! Thanks for visiting! xx
Aww, I love this post! Your little ones are clearly having a whale of a time! Fantastic that they got snow to play in, and that you managed to find sledges in time too. They really will remember all the fun in the snow for years to come. Hope they don’t need to wait too long for the next snow though!
Thanks so much for linking up to #Whatevertheweather 🙂 x
Thank you! We had a great day but haven’t seen a single flake of snow since!! Just rain, rain, rain….which isn’t quite as nice to play in!!! Thanks for reading! Xx
