Review & Giveaway: Alex Rider Collection
As a child Lewis could always be found with his head in a book. From the moment he could read he sailed through one book after another, reading the entire Road Dahl collection, David Williams and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, way before he started high school. I loved to see him enjoying books and yet now at 13, it seems he has reached an age where reading doesn’t have the same appeal as it once did, not helped by the fact he is in that middle ground where some books are too young, yet some still too old.
We were sent this fantastic collection of 10 Alex Rider booksย and I hoped that they would be enough to remind of his love of reading. Alex Rider is a fourteen year old by star athlete, dragged into the dark world of spies and espionage when his uncle, an M16 agent, is murdered. Alex is very much a teenage James Bond, a black belt in Karate with superhuman strength and speed, and as a result the books are filled with action packed adventures, mystery and suspense.

The Complete Missions collection consists of ten novels: Stormbreaker, Point Blanc, Skeleton Key, Eagle Strike, Scorpia, Ark Angel, Snakehead, Crocodile Tears, Russian roulette and Scorpia Rising. Aimed at children aged 11+, I couldn’t wait to hear what Lewis thought of the books!
Lewis started with the first book in the collection, Stormbreaker, and his initial reaction was, “Yeah it’s alright!”. After a couple of hours when he reappeared, he launched into an animated description of the book, telling me how the book contained some fairly violent scenes such as shooting and ninja fights, and how Alex had some witty comebacks and was a really likeable character. He also enjoyed that the book, although very surreal in some ways, was very real in others, such as mentioning some of his favourite clothing brands. I think for teens, it is so important to have that relatable hero or heroine.

It was interesting to see just how fast Lewis finished the first book, and soon started on the second. He said he felt they were much more suited to his age range than other books he has read from the school library or in class and, as a parent, I loved to see him rediscover his love of reading. I think at 13 the Alex Rider books have everything a teen could want – action, thrills and suspense!
Although Lewis is only three books into the series he hasn’t lost momentum and is ploughing his way through the rest. I take my hat off to the author, Anthony Horowitz, for drawing in the reader and knowing exactly how to hold their attention. As an award winning novelist for both adults and children, Anthony has been chosen by the Ian Fleming estate to write the new James Bond novel which will be published next year, a novel I’m sure that Lewis will read in the future.

Lewis gave the Alex Rider collection a huge thumbs up and yet you don’t have to take his word for it. To win the entire 10 book collection, with a RRP of ยฃ79.90 simply enter via the link below. One lucky winner will be notified via email at close of competition on 23rd December. Good Luck!
