Finding a tutor for your child with Tutorful

Over the last year, where the majority of our children’s education has taken place at home, I’m sure I’m not the only parent who has struggled. Not only have I struggled to teach four children whilst working full time at home, but I have struggled with the guilt that my children are getting behind with their education and the repercussions of that as they grow. There are many tutor services available, such as alchemy tuition, as well as Tutorful.

What is Tutorful?

Tutorful is an online service connecting you with over 11,000 private tutors specialising in a range of subjects for aged primary, secondary, A-Levels, university and even beyond. They provide one to one tuition for a whole host of reasons – be that to get help with a boost their confidence, pass a final exam, learn a new skill or, like my children desperately need, to recap on work they’ve missed.

How does it work?

Finding a tutor is really easy with Tutorful. You literally sign up to the website either via desktop or via the app, choose the subject you are looking to specialise in, schedule in your availability and then it brings up a list of tutors available to you! Each tutor has a profile with a photo, a description of any qualifications and experience they have, as well as how many hours they have taught via the platform. It also shows their fees which range from as little as £15 to £75 per hour.

Obviously in the middle of a pandemic tutoring is done on line in the comfort of your own home, with lessons scheduled in and shown in an easy to read format.

What did we think?

We decided to start off refreshing the children on their literacy and maths, with Megan going first for a thirty minute literacy lesson. We had chosen a primary school teacher tutoring out of school hours, with excellent reviews and a great demeanour in dealing with kids. Megan instantly warmed to her and I was amazed to be able to leave her sitting at the kitchen table enjoying her lesson whilst I took time out in the office to finish off some work.

Over the last week the children also experienced a shared Spanish lesson, something I am planning on continuing in the coming weeks as all three really enjoyed it. Learning a language is such an important skill and whilst neither Gaz or I are qualified to teach this, at £15 for a half hour session a week it’s really going to set the children on the right path to languages as they head to high school.

I love how easy Tutorful is to navigate, both the website and the app, how efficient the system is at booking in lessons, and cancelling those not needed, and how it leaves me feeling as though I am really giving my child the best chance with their education. I also love that whilst the kids are having their lessons on-line that leaves me with time to do my own work, clean up or even enjoy the luxury of half an hours peace with a book. After being both teacher and parent for such a long time, it is so welcomed!

Would we recommend it?

Absolutely!! The children found the sessions really helpful, extremely engaging and from speaking to them afterwards it felt as though they had learned a lot in just half an hour. I love that you can do as much or as little as you wish, with no minimum hours or spend needed to use the platform. I will certainly be recommending it to other parents and also keeping it in mind for Lewis as he sits his exams next year.
