Captain Aquafresh and the Nurdles: Making brushing fun!

With four children, three of whom are still very reluctant to get ready for school or bed each night, I certainly have my work cut out. Every night without fail, Eva, Megan and Harry will drag their feet as bedtime comes around, making excuses for “just five more minutes”, shuffling their way to the bathroom, and moaning repeatedly at having to brush their teeth. It’s definitely not my favourite time of day to say the least!

Over the years we have had to be creative to get the children on board with brushing their teeth – from reward charts, silly songs, and, often, outright bribery. So when I discovered the Aquafresh App, introducing Captain Aquafresh and the Nurdles, I was hopeful that our toothbrushing routine could finally become a little less stressful and a whole lot more fun!

Aquafresh knows that it’s hard to hold a child’s attention when brushing their teeth for two minutes, although completely necessary. Through the use of their app they hope to get brush time established as soon as possible to build habits to last a lifetime, and they do that through song and dance and some fantastic features which really appeal to children.

Downloading the app is totally free and simple to set up. Once you have created a profile and chosen a character, you can select the scenery you’d like from a choice of the beach, a mouth, the horizon and a castle. Even better, the more you brush the more scenes you can unlock which gives children a great incentive to keep on brushing!

You can then choose music to brush to from a choice of three, unlocking more the more you brush. The tunes are all super catchy and you can either use them via the app or link into your favourite playlists to provide endless dance mix-ups every time they brush!

The children’s favourite part was choosing the dance from silly or hip hop and the promise of more dances to be unlocked. The children chose silly (no surprise there!) and thought it was hilarious to see Captain Aquafresh doing the funky chicken dance!

Once you’ve made all of your selections you simply press ‘brush now’, the music starts and off you go! Each song and dance lasts for a full two minutes and we couldn’t wait to put it to the test!

It turns out that the Aquafresh app is a game changer, with all of the children desperate to brush their teeth whilst busting some dance moves! I honestly couldn’t believe what a difference it made, with the children falling about laughing and brushing away.

As a parent, it’s great to know that when using the app, alongside the correct Aquafresh dental products for my child, I can rest assured that my children’s teeth are in safe hands. For Harry at 4, the Little Teeth range is perfect, with the toothpaste specially designed by dental experts for toddlers aged 3-5 years. It provides gentle care with low abrasion and the benefit of Sugar Acid Protection, provided by fluoride.

For the girls, the Big Teeth range is aimed at children aged 6-8 years old, targeting those with missing teeth and new adult teeth. I didn’t know that the enamel on children’s little teeth is 50% thinner than adult teeth and it can take up to 3 years to reach full strength making them more susceptible to sugar attack which can lead to cavities. Big Teeth is designed by dental experts to really strengthen those new big teeth whilst looking after the last of the little ones.

At the end of every brush the app tells you how many brushes you have now totalled and allows you to unlock new features along the way. I am so relieved that we have finally found something which works for us and brushing need no longer results in melt downs from the kids…..and from me!!

I think these kind of apps/toothbrushes are such a good idea! Why is it when we are younger cleaning our teeth is so unappealing?! It’s basic hygiene haha.

  2. January 7, 2019 / 9:35 am

Oh yes, brushing teeth is a nightmare. It’s not my favourite time of the day as well. But colourful brushes have been found to work at my household 😊

I remember using AquaFresh when I was a child. I think it’s wonderful that they have this line of products out there to help kids of all ages!

  5. January 7, 2019 / 11:05 am

I swear, whoever thinks of these kind of apps is genius! Will definitely keep this in mind once my baby starts brushing on his own. Looks funny and fun!

  6. January 7, 2019 / 12:19 pm

I can see how this would be good for kids who hate brushing their teeth. But this old dinosaur is so anti devices, that I’d freak if my kids expected to take their phones into the bathroom too and knowing my luck, they’d get them wet and wreck them! (On the other hand, I definitely can’t boast about never having the toothbrushing reluctance problem as I was horrified the other day to notice how erm, well…’not exactly bright white’ my youngest’s nashers are! And at the dentist’s recently, they all scored below 5 out of 10 for their brushing efforts…I nearly died. Like the dance music touch though 🙂

  7. January 7, 2019 / 12:31 pm

This is soooo cute! I remember when Pratham was a toddler he had a Micky Mouse App about brushing and every morning he would hurry to the basin to dance with mickey mouse and brush his teeth 🙂 It also had a son, something like, “Brush Brush Brush & swing swing swing…” 😀
