Visit South Devon: A day In Brixham
Last month we were very lucky to stay at Beverley Holidays, the most beautiful, family holiday park in Goodrington, South Devon. Not only were we bowled over by the park itself, but the location could not have been any better!
Just four miles down the road is Brixham, a small fishing town in the district of Torbay, and undoubtedly one of the most stunning towns we have visited on the English Riviera.
It comes as no surprise that Brixham is a busy town, even on a Thursday it was bustling with visitors, or locals going about their day. One of the biggest attractions in Brixham is the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship, the Golden Hind, that is permanently moored at the harbour and open to visitors.
But for Eva, Megan and Harry, the biggest attraction was that Brixham is very popular for crabbing, with both adults and children lining the harbour walls, casting their nets and patiently waiting. And we couldn’t wait to join them!
You’d think that, at four, five and six, the children would grow tired of waiting to catch a crab, and yet I honestly think they would stand their all day!
Catching crabs is a big deal when you’re small, and as is always the case with these three, it fast became a competition!
We had the best morning crabbing in the sunshine and although the children loved catching crabs, they also loved letting them go free back into the sea.
After lunch we explored a little more of Brixham, wandering around the town and along the harbour, enjoying the view and soaking up the sun.
We loved all of the different coloured houses in Brixham, creating the most beautiful backdrop, and both Gaz and I said that if we had to live anywhere in the South, Brixham would be our first choice!
Another amazing thing about Brixham, and South Devon in general, is the ice cream! I lost count of the number of ice creams we tasted throughout the week but when you’re on holiday it’s the law, right?
Brixham has the most stunning marina that you can walk the whole way down along the breakwater towards a lighthouse at the end, and although it’s quite a trek for tired little legs, we had plenty to entertain us along the way.
Over on the beach there was a boat race starting which the children loved watching. Brixham seems to have a large sailing community and I’m sure events like this are very popular throughout the Summer months.
At the end of Victoria breakwater, half a mile into the marina, we arrived at the lighthouse which stands at 9 metres high. From there you get the most incredible views of Brixham!
We were incredibly lucky that, not only did we see the boat race but, we also caught the second day of the Torbay Air Show! Standing there in the most beautiful setting watching the Red Arrows swooping over head, the children’s eyes wide with amazement, was undoubtedly one of the most special moments we have ever shared, and one that we will never forget.
Although we had not intentionally planned to watch the Air Show, having seen it I would absolutely plan to visit at the same time next year and watch it all over again….even if my heart was beating out of my chest for the most of it!!
We had the most amazing day together at Brixham and created some lovely memories. It just goes to show that, sometimes, the best days out are the ones that haven’t cost a single penny.
Aww this looks like such a fun place to visit for a holiday or day! In fact we’re heading to Devon on holiday in September, so I’ll add Brixham to the list of places to visit 🙂
It is SO blue! Looks stunning. I last went to Brixham when I was about 2 so I really don’t remember it but I have seen pictures of myself there. It looks fab and would make a great stop off when we visit Lee’s family in Cornwall. PS – mine love crabbing too. Sarah

Oh my goodness! How beautiful is Brixham, I want to move there right now or at least go on holiday there. It’s instagram heaven with it’s pretty houses. It also looks like you were really lucky with the weather too. Sounds like you had a fab holiday x

Oh my gosh, that would be so fun to see in person. I’ve seen some jets fly over, but I haven’t seen an air show like this. What an amazing experience that must have been.

I’m embarrassed to admit I don’t know Devon at all but this looks amazing! That blue of the sea is incredible and it looks like such a pretty town. I’ve never been crabbing either, but Max is desperate to, so I’m keen to put that right. And how amazing to see the Red Arrows too – breathtaking!
I totally agree . . . snacking doesn’t count when you’re on vacation! I’d love to visit a cute little seaside town like this someday.
Wow, such a lovely, lovely town. It would sure be nice to have a vacation there someday. Watching a boat race would be so fun! Oh, and yes, diets get thrown out the window from vacation day 1.
Wow how beautiful is Brixham!! I’ve not explored Devon at all and I feel like we’re missing out. The air show looks incredible. I will definitely add this to the list for potential holidays for us x
This looks like a fabulous little place that my daughters would love to visit! They would really enjoy the fishing experience and seeing the big boats.
