Our Holiday Moments

If you asked me to tell you some of my favourite memories from childhood, the majority would be from our holidays, the moments my Dad would wake us up at two in the morning, carry us to the car and begin the long drive to the South, the days we spent on the beach, paddling in the sea, walks down the pier eating fish and chips straight from the newspaper. The holidays we caught the ferry over the Isle of Man, how my brother turned green and my Mum got in a flap, our holidays over to France, trailing round old war museums, bribed with the promise of an ice cream.

If you asked me to tell you some of my favourite memories from my teens, they would absolutely be of our holidays. The years my parents allowed me to take a friend, the cheap wine we would drink, the boys we would kiss, the friends we would make and the tans we would return home with. They would be of the year we left college and all twelve of us went to Magaluf, the craziest, wildest two weeks we had ever had, filled with cocktails and dancing and so much laughter.

And if you asked me my favourite memories now as an adult, I would tell you, without a moments hesitation, they are of our family holidays each year, the good and the bad. The times we broke down on the motorway, three years running, the year that Harry was bitten by a spider, caught hand foot and mouth and split his head straight open. The days on the beach building sandcastles, digging holes so big we could bury Daddy in them, the look on the children’s faces as we pulled them along in their dingy, squealing with surprise when the cold water hit them. The days out at theme parks and zoos, picnics and take-aways, pool days and rainy days, so many memories that I look back on throughout the year and wish that holidays could last forever.

This year I promised myself that when we returned home from our holiday down in Dorset, I would finally, for the first time ever, order a custom photo book from Truprint so that all of our memories are in one place to look back on in years to come and remember the holiday where, for the first time as a family, the car didn’t break down, nobody got injured and actually, we had the most perfect time!

  31. I dont know what it is about the holidays, but suddenly everyone makes an attempt to get along and all the things that might be bothering you the rest of the year suddenly don’t matter. That and my family is huge so it’s one of the only times a year we can get most of us together.
