If you asked me what my favourite childhood book is, I would tell you, without a moments hesitation, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. As a child I can remember nothing more exciting than lifting the tabs on each page to see what the caterpillar had eaten, reading along with my Mum, a teacher at school and later by myself, until I knew it word for word .
When Lewis was born I had bought him The Very Hungry Caterpillar as his first ever book, and countless more copies over the years for Eva, Megan and Harry, replacing them when they got so worn from being read over and over.
I hadn’t realised until recently that it is almost 50 years since Eric Carle designed, illustrated and wrote The Very Hungry Caterpillar and yet no surprise that the sales of this iconic book have now exceeded over 45million copies, with one being sold every 30 seconds!!
We were recently offered a gorgeous selection of The Very Hungry Caterpillar merchandise and with the children being such huge fans, we couldn’t wait to try it! I put together our top ten items for all Hungry Caterpillar fans!!
1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Melamine Sectional Tray
I love a sectional tray, mainly for the reason that as a parent whose children have a meltdown if any of their food touches a separate item there is hell to pay! Bean juice on chips? It’s most likely to end up on the floor! So these trays are great for sectioning out their dinner and keeping them, and me, happy.
RRP £8 Available from www.portmeirion.co.uk
2. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Happy Tin
I love this tin, filled with three fantastic colouring and activity books, a poster, 50 fun stickers and 4 felt tip pens. Plus it can all be stored away neatly (bonus) and the tin can be re-used after for all of those tiny little kinder egg toys you find stuffed under the couch. Or maybe that’s just me….
RRP £16.99 Available from Asda, Debenhams, Amazon, HMV, Tesco, The Works and Sainsbury’s.
3. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Press Out and Play
This is a fab little activity book where you can colour in the card pieces, press them out and then slot them together to make animals from the beloved Eric Carle stories. It comes with 6 crayons and press-out pieces to create 7 animal models.
RRP £4.99 Available from Debenhams, Amazon, WHSmith and Toys ‘R Us.
4. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Let’s Explore
The kids loved this book with animal stampers and ink pad to decorate the pages and create their own art work, plus lots of other little activities such as spot the difference or making a caterpillar door handle. I love books like this which you can pull out on rainy days or on holidays.
RRP £4.99 Available from Debenhams, Amazon and Sainsbury’s.
5. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Cloudy Apple Drinks
I don’t know about you but my children will eat and drink just about anything that has a picture of their favourite character on there. I really struggle to get fruit juice into Harry and yet as a huge fan of the Hungry Caterpillar, he couldn’t get enough of these! I love that they are made from 50% pressed fruit, school approved, not from concentrate and no added sugar, sweeteners, colours or preservatives. Plus they are totally delicious!
RRP £1.89 for 3 x 200ml Available from Waitrose, Ocado and Tesco.
6. The Very Hungry Caterpillar 2018 Family Calendar
We are notorious for forgetting birthdays and anniversaries, so a calendar is much needed, and this one is great. There’s room for all the family meaning we might just get out of the bad books this coming year!
RRP £9.99 Available from The Calendar Club and Amazon
7. The Very Hungry Caterpillar 2018 Family Calendar
This smaller sized family calendar is equally lovely and perfect as a second planner when, like us, you forget to look at the first one!
RRP £9.99 Available from The Calendar Club and Amazon
8. Where is the Very Hungry Caterpillar?
The Very Hungry Caterpillar has sold over 41 million copies worldwide in over 62 languages. In this new lift-flap book, children are asked where the Hungry Caterpillar might be hiding. Is he hiding in the grass? No, that’s a chirpy cricket! Is he nibbling the strawberry? No, that’s an ant! The lift-flap on every spread lets little readers join in the fun as they search in this fun, interactive take on the beloved children’s story, and my kids LOVE it!!
RRP £7.99 Available from all good bookshops.
9. The Very Hungry Caterpillar Placemats Pad
These are FAB and sure to keep your little ones busy at mealtimes. We use these when we go out to eat which means that there’s way less whinging as we wait for our food to come and no moment of panic when the restaurant doesn’t have paper and pencils….we have learned from experience!!
RRP £9.99 Available from The Works

With so many of these items making the perfect gift, I love these birthday cards to celebrate 1st and 2nd birthdays! Each card has a printed inside along with black and white artwork.
