52 Books Challenge: Our Song by Dani Atkins

After reading A Million Dreams by Dani Atkins earlier in the month, I was desperate to read more of her novels and decided that Our Song would be the next read for my 52 Books Challenge. Anyone who has ever read a Dani Atkins book will know that she writes the most beautiful, emotional, and gripping stories that not only draw you in but stay with you long after you turn that last page, and Our Song did not disappoint.

Our Song is the story of Ally and Charlotte whose paths have intersected over the years although they have never been close friends. Charlotte married Ally’s first love David and, in a tragic twist of fate, the two of them are brought back together for one last, dramatic time where their lives will change forever.

Taking place in the hospital, where both Joe and David’s lives hang in the balance, Ally and Charlotte realise that despite their differences, the two women have far more in common than they thought.

The story is told through varying passages of time, from the viewpoint of both Ally and Charlotte, and piece by piece Atkins reveals a series of events which link the two ladies and how, even all these years later, they are an integral part of each others lives, and futures.

Dani Atkins writes so beautifully, making you feel every single one of the emotions in that waiting room, endearing both women to you almost instantly, and feeling that gut wrenching pain when it comes to making the most agonising decision. Despite having never been in their situation, I felt as though through the course of the book I had taken on the weight of all that sadness and regret, and by the final chapters I could barely see the words for tears streaming down my cheeks, moving me far more than any book I have ever read in my forty years. I think that in itself speaks volumes.

This really is the most incredible story, beautifully told, thought provoking, and such an important reminder about the fragility of life and the importance of friendship. If you read just one book this year, let it be this.
