Tips for maximising space in a small children’s bedroom
With toys, clothes, books and games all competing for room, it’s easy for a kid’s bedroom to feel a bit chaotic. The answer may not be getting rid of things, but making better use of the space available instead. Follow our tips to help you do just that.
Use furniture with more than one function
When space is tight, every piece of furniture needs to earn its place. A bed that doubles as storage frees up valuable room. Explore options with built-in drawers or a lift-up mattress if you need to free up room elsewhere.
Instead of a bulky wardrobe and separate desk, you could have a bunk bed for kids with a built-in desk and hanging rail underneath. Alternatively, a fold-out desk can provide a study area without permanently filling the room.
Seating can also be versatile. A storage ottoman holding blankets and toys is also a nice spot to sit, and a pull-out trundle bed is ideal for sleepovers without taking up unnecessary activity space during the day.
Make the most of vertical space
When floor space is limited, the best way to go is up. Wall-mounted shelves keep books, toys and decorative items off the ground while keeping them within reach. Tall bookcases are also effective but need to be secured against the wall.
Hooks and pegboards on walls or the back of doors provide extra storage for bags, hats and other hangable accessories. Even the area above the wardrobe or behind the bed can hold baskets for seasonal clothes and less-used items.
Hanging organisers attached to the side of a wardrobe or bunk bed make perfect homes for smaller essentials like socks, art supplies or bedtime books. Get creative!
Add hidden storage features
Clutter quickly makes a small room feel even smaller. But discreet storage solutions can take care of it all.
Under-bed drawers or rolling bins keep toys and extra bedding tucked away but easily accessible. A storage bench at the foot of the bed works well for larger items, while a headboard with built-in shelves provides a hidden place for bedtime essentials.
Sliding wardrobe doors eliminate the need for clearance space, making them ideal for narrow rooms. These may be out of the question, so if you have traditional hinged doors, consider adding slim, behind-the-door racks to store shoes, craft supplies or accessories.
Even a simple trick like using matching storage boxes on open shelves keeps everything looking tidy and cohesive.
Beating clutter and chaos in a small room is a challenge – but it can be done. Use these tips and tricks to help you conquer your small children’s bedroom.
