The unexpected signs it might be time to move house

Most people don’t move into a new house already thinking about the next one. We choose a home for a family because it feels perfect for us, perhaps with a bit of growing room and some expansion options. Over time, things change. Perhaps there are more children or pets. Over time, the home that was perfect for you starts to feel less special.

These feelings are normal and they creep up over time, often hitting us in surprising ways. In this article, we’ll look at some of those signs and what you can do about them.

When everyday life starts to feel chaotic

You might think that the best sign that it’s time to move would be something simple like needing an extra bedroom or more space on the driveway, but it’s not as simple as that. Our minds work in mysterious ways and it can often be a much more subtle shift.

Take a look through this list and see if you recognise any of these feelings:

  • Feeling constantly overwhelmed at home, even when nothing in particular has gone wrong
  • A sense that the house never quite feels calm or settled, no matter how much effort is made
  • Becoming more irritable or stressed in everyday routines that used to feel manageable
  • A quiet feeling that the home no longer reflects the family’s current life or needs

Sound familiar? On the surface, it might be hard to pin these feelings to your house. You might assume you’re just tired or busy at work. But they could be signs that the space you live in has become too small and no longer serves you.

Next steps if you think a move is the answer

One of the easiest ways to check whether your feelings are being caused by your home is to start planning a move. You don’t have to go as far as selling your house at this point; just take some first steps. One of the first questions you’ll have is how much is my house worth, so using an online valuation service is a great way to get a sense of your options.

Once you know what price you could expect, allow yourself to imagine a move. How does that make you feel? If you immediately hate the idea, perhaps that’s not what’s at the root of your feelings. If you get excited by the idea and enjoy browsing for new homes, it’s worth exploring further.

Be realistic about what would need to be different about a new home for it to feel more comfortable. Do you need more space or just a different layout? Would more outside space help? A bigger garage or garden? Maybe the area no longer suits you and a similar house in a more practical neighbourhood is what you need? Take an honest walk through your current home and list everything you love about it, as well as the bits that don’t work.

One of the best things you can do is to trust your instinct. Tune into how your home makes you feel and don’t be afraid to move – it could be the start of a brilliant new chapter.
