Style of the next generation: Children’s clothing trends

Fashion is not just for the adults of this world; it is also important to children. Kids these days are now setting their style demonstrating confidence and their cultural knowledge. Arguably, generation Alpha is beginning to define its own fashion rules as they are a generation born within the digital age. Influence particularly by social media and pop culture.

Gone are the days when they dress to conform to society’s expectations much like the generations before them did. They are dressing to be conspicuous.

From themed concert attires to streetwear inspired clothing like all new slim jean’s collections. There is a whole new look and design that are becoming staple pieces of clothing for young fashionistas.

Let’s take an in-depth look at this phenomenon.

Why 90s kids still define “cool”

Although the world of fashion is constantly evolving, the 1990s will always remain an inspiring era. Baggy jeans, loud wind jackets, cartoon printed tees – that is what characterized a generation.

Brands went all the way towards individualism, and the kids of the ’90s sported the freedom on their sleeves. Imagine tie-dye, bucket hats, and denim overalls.

The 90s are still present even in the current sets. Its creativity resonates in its bulky silhouettes, retro color schemes, and the use of graphic logos, which still appeal to audience groups today.

This nostalgia serves as a style guide for modern fashion-forward children, revealing that comfort and individuality never go out of style.

The style leaders of today

A study carried out by the Pew Research Centre found that 51 percent of parents who responded that their child has a smartphone bought the phone for the child at the age of 11.

You may be wondering, what does this have to do with fashion and style? Well, no longer are children waiting to follow trends; thanks to the development of social media, they have become trendsetters.

The most common fashion styles among them are:

  • Gender-fluid attire: In simple language, you may refer to it as unisex attire. Instead of insisting on boys versus girls, they put more emphasis on self-expression.
  • Co-ord sets: These are matching tops and bottoms, featuring striking designs and fine materials.
  • Multi-layered clothes: These are clothes that typically involve wearing denim over cotton, beneath hoodies, and emphasizing the depth factor.
  • Athleisure vibes: Typically, this style features comfortable joggers, hooded jackets, and sporty logos.

Note this: most Gen Alphas often think about how they feel in clothes, not just how they appear.

Pop culture’s massive influence

Where do most children get their dressing inspiration from? Let’s find out:

  • Television series such as “Stranger Things” or “Wednesday” revive the ‘old timey’ and Gothic trends.
  • Music: It comes as no surprise that kids now dress for themed tours, such as the Eras Tour-inspired glitz or oversized skater-inspired attire worn by Billie Eilish.
  • TikTok stars and YouTubers of their age: Children also listen to and take their fashion cues from TikTok stars, influencers and YouTubers like their age.

Interestingly, fashion has much more to do with being part of something bigger than yourself. It serves as the starting point for a shared identity and style.

Breaking the rules (the right way)

Rejection of old-fashioned rules is one of the major changes that have occurred in the current trend of fashion among children. No longer is blue for boys, and pink is for girls.

No longer is specific clothing only wearable in certain seasons. Nowadays, your summer shorts can be paired with winter boots or neon-colored clothes combined with earthy colors, and it all just looks right.

This creative space does not escape the fashion-forward parents either. They will not have their children become shy, timid, and restrained, and it all starts with how they are dressed.

Conclusion

The current fashion deliberately alludes to the 90s and contemporary culture. Its buzz and its rebel spirit have seen kids dress more intentionally than ever before.

It is not only fun, but also fierce, as the new generation can afford to be fashionable. The more their lives are digital and diverse, the more varied their closets become.
