SCU Online Review 2025

Life is becoming increasingly fast-paced, and it can be extremely difficult to carve out space for your hobbies and quality time with your family, let alone time to learn new skills and pursue education.

Thankfully, universities and educational institutions have adapted. You can now complete courses that take you to a full degree and postgraduate level entirely online, giving you the flexibility you need to pursue your dreams.

Of course, not all of these courses are created equal: there’s typically a lower barrier to entry with online education, and the system isn’t as regulated. Finding which universities offer the best courses can be hard, and there are inherent challenges associated with online study that simply aren’t present with traditional courses, such as typically less contact time and a learning environment less conducive to dedicated study.

Today, you’ll learn about one of Australia’s most well-established post-graduate online learning centres – Southern Cross University (SCU Online). But is it worth the hype? Should this be the online college you choose to take your education further? Read on to find out!

The Flexibility You Need

Courses at SCU have been designed from the ground up to prioritise flexibility – an essential element of any online course worth its salt. No matter what your commitments, it’s clear they’ve done their best to make sure you have everything you need to complete your course.

Unlike traditional universities, SCU offers six intakes per year, meaning they account for whatever sort of job or lifestyle you have; this means you can join whenever you feel ready, and don’t have to be pushed into a single intake at the start of the academic year when you don’t have time.

Their online platform is also very well designed. You can easily pick up where you left off, whether you’re on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or even a phone, and the hub is designed to have everything you could possibly need at your fingertips.

Prioritising Support

Another great feature of SCU courses is that they place great emphasis on supporting their students right the way throughout their studies. Plenty of universities offer great online courses, but they don’t support their students properly through the process; this is where the online environment typically struggles, as it’s difficult to replicate the ability to simply arrange a quick meeting with one of your tutors on campus.

This university has made sure that doesn’t happen. Once you enrol, you’re given dedicated individual support: you can contact your support tutor at any time to make sure that you promptly get the help you need, and prevent major issues from occurring before they interfere with your studies.

Another great thing about SCU is that you also have campus access if you need it. You’re able to use all on-campus facilities, and can participate in a traditional college life if you so choose. This does require you to live nearby, of course, so unfortunately, some students may have a better experience than others here.

Building Life-Long Connections

Traditionally, one of the major downsides of online learning is that you don’t really meet anyone. This can be isolating compared to the traditional university experience, where a large part of the reason you go in the first place, beyond studying, is to meet and interact with new people.

Thankfully, SCU has done their best to make the online learning environment as social as possible. The courses encourage peer-to-peer interaction, helping students to work together as seamlessly as possible. Given the fact that you can also use campus facilities as described above, you’re also able to meet up with some of your peers if you live nearby, adding to the flexible social atmosphere.

It’ll never completely replicate the traditional, residential campus experience, but SCU’s courses seem to offer the next best thing. It’ll be down to your individual temperament as to whether you’re able to make the most of socialising this way, but it’s there for the taking should you wish to embrace it.

Breaking Down Barriers

SCU courses are also some of the most affordable available. The programs on offer have clearly been carefully deliberated over to offer as much value as possible for the lowest price, and thankfully, there are flexible payment plans, too (though a couple of extra options wouldn’t hurt).

Nevertheless, if you’re considering an online course like this, it’s always important to have your finances in order first. If you need to save, give yourself the time so that you’re not struggling to make payments; with such flexible intakes, there are more than enough opportunities to get yourself in a secure position to fund your studies before you embark on the journey.

Pros and Cons

To close off with, here are the pros and cons:

Pros

  • Great Support: You shouldn’t need to worry about not receiving the right support if you’re struggling while studying at SCU. Your personal support tutor will always be on hand to help you.
  • Flexible Payment Options: Not being able to afford the education you deserve is much less of an issue at SCU, with a range of payment options available to suit all budgets.
  • Access to the Campus: The ability to learn on campus, and live the traditional university lifestyle if you want, is a big plus for studying here.
  • The Opportunity to Make New Friends: While online platforms are never the most ideal for making new friends, SCU does its best to promote as much collaboration as possible.

Cons

  • On-Campus Experience Unaccesible to Most: While the benefit of making use of on-campus facilities is great, it does have the potential for some students to then have a better experience than others.
  • Lack of Undergraduate Courses: It would be great if, in the future, the institution could offer its well-designed services to undergraduates.

Wrapping Up

If you’re looking for a well-rounded university that offers a supportive, social online environment, SCU has you covered. No online learning platform is ever perfect, but thanks to a great amount of effort to create a balanced experience, this is an option you definitely want to investigate further.
