Ireland’s Popularity Grows as Tourism Investments Increase

788,700 overseas visitors travelled to Ireland in August 2026, an increase of 2% compared to the previous month. Great Britain accounted for 36% of all visitors, but interestingly, 25% of people travelled from North America, showing visitors are nearing record-breaking highs.

Why Are More People Choosing Ireland?

Dublin is home to attractions such as the Guinness Storehouse. Wicklow and Meath, on the other hand, offer historic sites, which include Glendalough and Brú na Bóinne. People can also travel through counties which include Galway, the Cliffs of Moher, Killarney National Park and more. Information on the most-visited destinations can be found on the Go With Guide website.

As there are so many rich, historical destinations, holidaymakers have an incentive to turn a short city break into a much wider tour. As leisure holidays made up 51% of overseas trips to Ireland in August, recent government incentives are clearly making a difference.

Ireland’s government is contributing €400 million to tourism and development between 2026 and 2030, while investing €77 million in overseas marketing. Funding like this not only supports attractions; it helps to showcase Ireland as an international hub for cultural experiences.

The €65.5 million investment in Westport Estate is a prime example here. Set for completion by 2028, the 18th-century house is undergoing a full restoration and will be open to the public for the first time. There are plans for a 34-acre native plant biodiversity landscape, and a central hub, which will feature an orientation area, retail space and a ca

The investment will create an international base for those who want to explore the western coast of Ireland, and it’s estimated to generate €113 million in visitor spending.

Ireland Continues to Inspire Travellers

Television is helping to put a spotlight on Ireland. Bad Sisters, Game of Thrones, Blue Lights and Normal People were all filmed across Ireland. Famous actors, including Cillian Murphy, Saoirse Ronan and Colin Farrell, have also put attention on the country’s talent. In iGaming, Irish folklore is a theme too.

Casino games like Slingo Rainbow Riches draw inspiration from leprechauns, pots of gold and rolling green hills, all of which are synonymous with Ireland.

Ireland is getting so much exposure across several verticals, so the Irish government’s investment in the tourism sector has come at the right time.

Outlined in the Sectoral Capital Plan, €200 million will be set aside for regional tourism products, and €4.3 billion will span across decarbonisation efforts, innovation and enterprise investments. Investors hope that this will help to spread visitor growth outside the urban hubs, while ensuring that there isn’t too much reliance on singular markets. The investment supports Ireland’s goal of generating €9B overseas visitors by 2031.

As over 31 million Americans claim Irish ancestry, many view a trip to Ireland as a way to visit their cultural roots, showing how even though new innovations are important, Ireland’s rich history has just as much of a part to play. If this can be protected moving forward, Ireland could become an even more popular, worldwide destination.
