How to Keep Tidier Kids’ Rooms
Does it seem like your kids always have a messy room? Part of the problem could be that there is nowhere sensible to put some of their items. Maybe you just need a better organized room for them, and if that’s the case, then we have a few DIY ideas you can try to keep their rooms looking neater.
1. Add a Bookcase
Even if your kids don’t have a lot of books, adding a bookcase to the room can make a big difference. The bookcase can be used to store what books they have and then the rest of the space can hold stuffed animals, toys, shoes, handbags, knickknacks, and anything else that is lying around the room. Let your kid help decide where things should go on the bookcase and then remind them that each item has a shelf. It can help to label each shelf so your kid remembers where to place each thing. You can decorate the bookcase as well, painting designs or hanging posters on the side.
2. Install a Hanging Rack
This can be very useful for storing purses, backpacks, coats, sweaters, and other items that can hang up. You can install a rack with peg hooks for hanging items or with small slots to hang up smaller items. You can choose an out-of-the-way place for the rack to be placed, like behind the door, high up on the wall or at the end of the bed. Racks can be installed on the sides of bookcases, on large bed headboards, and other places where there is some vertical space available.
3. Place a Bin (or Several) in the Room
Some items in your kid’s room won’t really benefit from being neatly organized. You may just need to face the fact that some of the stuff in that room would never get organized no matter how nicely you arrange shelves or closet space for it. Those Lego blocks, toy cars, dollhouse furniture, and other assorted small items may be better off in a bin. Try as you might to arrange them nicely throughout the bedroom, you’re going to have days where you just wish there was a bin for your kid to throw everything into. Having a couple of these in the room with a label on them to say what’s supposed to go in there can be a great way to make cleanup go fast says Shelby with NYC Post Construction Cleaning. This is also a lot less expensive than the traditional wooden toy box. Those have gone out of style in most homes to be replaced with plastic storage bins.
4. Help with the Tidying
Your child may struggle to clean up their room on their own sometimes. If it’s a small mess, it may not take them very long to clean up, but if there’s a lot to do, they can feel overwhelmed by the workload. Your child could benefit from your help sometimes, and working together can help destress your child, and it can be an opportunity for you to teach your kids some tips about cleaning up the room more effectively and efficiently. You may also want to hire a cleaning service periodically, particularly if you don’t have time to help your kid clean their room or if your kid is studying for tests. Sometimes, having professionals clean the house is the best idea. You will love how little effort it requires from you and how good the finished results look.
5. In with the New, Out with the Old
Anytime your kid gets a lot of new toys or new stuff to put in their room, it’s a good time to look at what they have in the room and assess if some of the old stuff needs to be gotten rid of. You can keep the room free of clutter a lot more easily if you get rid of some of your child’s toys, books, and other items they’re not using. Whether this means donating them to a charity, passing them on to a family member, a friend, or having a yard sale, decluttering and organizing often starts with removing some of the things that aren’t in use anymore. This is something you want to do with your child involved, so they’re not looking for something they expect to be there but that you got rid of. Talk to your child about refreshing the stuff they have in their room, getting rid of some of the old stuff when they get some new things. You can talk about some of the benefits to get them on board, like how it will make someone else happy or how it gives them less work to do when they clean their room.
6. Create Storage under the Bed
If there are always toys scattered across the floor, you may need to find some new storage locations. While you may dread putting some items under the bed, but there is an organized way to do that. If you’re storing loose items under the bed, it can be a pain to sweep under there. You would usually have to move everything out, and having a lot of loose items there makes that difficult. Instead, you can put storage bins under the bed or pull-out drawers, depending on the setup. You could also place items in small boxes under the bed or even in bags. All of these will be easier to move out of the way so that you can clean under the bed effectively. For teenagers, optimizing storage becomes even more crucial, and exploring innovative beds for teenagers with built-in storage solutions can help maintain a clutter-free environment while catering to their unique needs and preferences. Plus, it opens up a lot of extra storage space and makes the room look tidier.
7. Install Hooks
Simply placing or two in strategic locations can make a big difference in how clean the room looks. If your child is used to hanging their coat on their bedpost or leaving handbags on the dresser, a hook can serve as a better spot for those things. It makes the room look more organized if everything has a dedicated place to go. You can install hooks behind the door and up on the walls where items won’t be touching the floor when hanging on hooks.

Loved your organizing ideas, I have used the cubbies and basket thing with my daughter, it works great and looks nice at the same time!!! Love family game night!
