Here are the 5 signs that it’s time for a new stylist

Choosing a new stylist to cut your hair is often a daunting prospect. With the national lockdown showing many Brits just how complicated cutting hair can be, it’s no wonder that choosing a new place to get your haircut is a careful and considered process. 

And, when you’ve finally found somewhere, what happens if your stylist doesn’t live up to your expectations? 

With this in mind, Nathan Haley, a hair expert and the co-founder of barber shop and barber academy NOTJUST, shares his five tips on the warning signs that it’s time to find a new stylist and save your hair (and wallet) from a catastrophe. 

The 5 signs it’s time to find a new hair stylist 

1. Your haircut resembles a DIY job

You should be leaving your hair appointment happy, and entering safe in the knowledge that your hairdresser will be capable of providing the type of cut and style you’re looking for. 

If your haircuts start to resemble a DIY job (and we all know what that looks like thanks to lockdown!), then it’s time to find someone who can actually give you the professional level of care you’re paying for.

2. They’re constantly distracted during the appointment

With so many things that can go wrong during the haircutting process, the last thing you want is for your hairdresser to be on their phone or otherwise not concentrating on the task at hand. 

One slip could lead to a hair mishap or even injury, and it’s simply not worth the risk to keep returning to a stylist who cannot concentrate on the task at hand. 

3.Your haircuts are not consistent 

If you’re finding that, despite asking for the same style each time, your haircuts are lacking consistency, then it’s time to find someone who can provide you with what you’re looking for consistently. This can often come down to training or even poor equipment, but at the very least you should know that your preferred style is doable (and that each haircut is not a surprise reveal!).

4. You are rushed through your appointments

Ever feel like you’ve been clipped and dipped? Meaning, your barber cut your hair so quickly you didn’t even see it happen, and now they have their hand out asking for money? 

That’s not a good thing. Speedy cuts are a warning sign for wanting what’s in your wallet rather than caring about your mane.

Look for a barber that takes their time, making you feel at ease and that they have a passion for your image.

5. Prices are growing quicker than your hair 

If you find that you’re paying more and more after every visit, then it’s time to find someone who can at least be transparent with their pricing, and be open about potential increases. 

This is particularly important for those who budget for their haircuts, as the last thing you need is to go outside of your budget and not be able to afford the next cut. 

Nathan adds that “It’s important to keep your options open for a new Barber or stylist because Barbering and Hairdressing are rapidly blurring into one, and not all stylists can confidently cut all hair lengths, styles, and textures.”
