Common Triggers for Anxiety and How to Avoid Them

According to statistics from the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults each year. Anxiety can take many forms and manifest in a variety of ways. Some of the most common types of anxiety disorders affecting people today include social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Many factors can contribute to anxiety and cause symptoms to worsen. In this article, we will explore some of the common triggers individuals with anxiety experience and the steps they can take to avoid them.

Medications

Certain medications can induce anxiety symptoms including antidepressants, stimulants and thyroid medications. Some common types of prescription medication that can trigger anxiety include the following:

  • Corticosteroids:  Corticosteroids are often prescribed to treat asthma, allergies and bronchitis.
  • Thyroid medications: Thyroid medications used in the treatment of hypothyroidism such as Armour Thyroid, NP Thyroid and Nature-Throid.
  • Levodopa and carbidopa: This combination drug, commonly known as Rytary, is used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Anxiety has been reported as a common side effect in clinical trials of the drug.
  • Phenytoin medications: Phenytoin medications such as Dilantin and Phenytoin control seizures by calming abnormal electrical activity in the brain. However, it can also trigger anxiety and panic attacks in some people.

If you are taking medication that is triggering your anxiety, speak with your doctor to discuss alternative options.

Caffeine

Several studies have been conducted which confirm the link between caffeine and anxiety. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, causing the production and release of adrenaline in the body. Adrenaline triggers the body’s fight or flight response, also known as the acute stress response, causing an individual to feel anxious and jittery. By avoiding or reducing the intake of caffeinated beverages such as tea, and coffee, individuals can lessen their feelings of anxiety.

Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation is another common trigger for anxiety. Many factors can affect sleep including environment, lifestyle and health. Studies have confirmed that sleep disturbances are highly common in anxiety disorders and issues such as insomnia or nightmares are included in some anxiety disorder definitions, like generalized anxiety disorder and PTSD.

Treating issues related to sleep deprivation may require a therapeutic solution that teaches individuals coping mechanisms. If you would like professional assistance for coping with anxiety an anxiety therapist in your area may be able to offer you the specialist help and support you need.

Poor Diet

Poor nutritional habits can trigger anxiety. This includes processed foods such as candy, refined cereals, pastries, and high-fat dairy products. A diet consisting of sugary snacks and junk food can cause blood sugar levels to spike and crash leading to mood swings and increased levels of anxiety.

To counter these side effects, a balanced diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is recommended. Dehydration can also contribute to anxiety so it is important to drink enough water each day.

By following the guidance outlined, individuals can avoid many of the common triggers that can cause anxiety.
