Are you a New Mom? Here are Some Tips No One Told you About

First-time mothers assume they need all the help they can get as having a baby is a huge responsibility. Even so, the amount of pressure we put on new moms can be overwhelming and unnecessary. What most new moms don’t know is that babies are far more resilient and your maternal instincts are going to kick in. So, while some advice like “sleep when the baby sleeps” is helpful and accurate, there’s also many tips that should be shared with new moms to make this drastic change easier. So, let’s get right to it!

You Will Learn with Time

Once you become a mom, it seems like everyone has an opinion. Your friends and family will all put in their two cents and all the advice coming every which way can be overwhelming. However, you will grow accustomed to your baby’s needs and begin to understand their cues. With time, you’ll be able to notice the different types of cries and differentiate between a hungry cry and a diaper-change cry.

Following Every Piece of Advice is Not Mandatory

As mentioned above, while many will offer tips and tricks to help soothe and calm a crying baby, it’s best to stick to parenting books and professionals when learning various techniques rather than listening to the opinions of those around you.

For instance, swaddling is a method that has proven to work since the beginning of time, but you need to know how to do it correctly for it to effectively comfort your child. Learning the proper way to test techniques that help calm your newborn baby is vital. You want to ensure your baby is not only comforted and safe, but that you aren’t denying your child the chance to develop skills such as self-soothing. Furthermore, you can start to feel stressed and insecure when too much information is thrown at you, so take a deep breath and keep in mind that you don’t need to take in everyone’s opinion.

Routine Helps

The sooner you can get into a routine, the better. It won’t be a very strict routine but if you can roughly estimate feeding times, you’ll be able to gauge changing times. Moreover, since you’ll be surviving on little and interrupted sleep, the routine will help you create some consistency which will, in turn, help your baby feel secure. Furthermore, don’t be hard on yourself if you haven’t found time in your routine to do anything else. If you haven’t done the housework, don’t fret. Similarly, if all you’ve done is take care of the baby, that’s already a huge accomplishment.

Go Easy on Yourself

Even after the pregnancy hormones are gone, you may find yourself feeling the baby blues often, crying for no reason, and dealing with new bodily changes and functions. Try to avoid being hard on yourself; you are going through a major adjustment period, so it’s vital that you are understanding with yourself. Acknowledge how you’re feeling that day and allow the feeling to pass.

Breastfeeding Takes Practice

If you are not able to breastfeed, that’s absolutely fine. There are so many amazing formulas available today that ensure your child gets all the nutrients you need. If you are able to, don’t be alarmed if it takes a little time getting there. What most people don’t tell you is that breastfeeding takes practice, and it won’t be uncomfortable forever. Eventually, it will simply be an incredibly bonding experience.

Leaving the House is Now a Chore

You will have heard people discuss how traumatic leaving your baby alone for the first time can be. However, what they don’t say is how hard leaving the house can be with the baby. You will never travel light ever again; even if you’re merely heading down the road to the park. Preparing to take your baby out requires a list of items that you should probably have posted on your fridge until your “baby brain” has given you your memory back.

As scary and overwhelming as it may be, keep in mind that you are harder on yourself than you need to be. Remember, it’s your child and you’re going to figure each other out along the way. Don’t hesitate to ask for help as your family needs to be your rock at this time and take the time to find ways to relax and not stress about it all too much. After all, stress prevents you from being in the moment, and the newborn stage goes by so fast. So, the most important thing is that you really take the time to enjoy each stage of your baby’s life.
