Are Chevrolet Vehicles Easy to Maintain?

When purchasing a vehicle, drivers must consider more than the purchase price. They also have to factor in insurance, maintenance, and repairs. When considering maintenance, they may think certain brands are more expensive than others to keep up. Tesla and Mercedes are two brands with high maintenance costs in the eyes of most drivers.

However, as vehicles today contain more high-tech features, the price of maintaining the average passenger vehicle will also increase. Customers need to research maintenance costs for different models to learn how much they can expect to spend. They may find that a vehicle with a higher purchase price may cost less over the long term as maintenance costs are lower.

When looking at different vehicles, the driver should contact northside service center and ask about maintenance costs. They also need to consider the car’s fuel efficiency, parts cost, and the likelihood of major repairs. The service center can help them determine how much they will spend over the car’s life based on the experience of average drivers with the same make and model.

Maintaining a Chevrolet

Many drivers own a Chevrolet today. This American icon remains popular for several reasons. When they purchase one of these cars, they must know how much they should budget for various expenses. One way to determine this is to look at multiple lists of the most expensive vehicles to maintain.

For example, drivers may gravitate to the Chevy Cobalt because it does not have a high purchase price. However, the maintenance cost for these vehicles over 10 years could almost equal the purchase price. Did the driver save money by going with the less expensive car when they first purchased it?

Average Costs

According to RepairPal, Chevy drivers pay an average of $887 yearly to maintain and repair their vehicles. This is slightly less than the industry average of $891, which surprises many. Chevy is not in the top 50 percent regarding reliability, as determined by RepairPal. This doesn’t stop drivers from falling in love with these vehicles. Various sources have different opinions regarding the reliability of this brand. RepairPal is only one of several review sites to consider when determining if Chevrolet is a model they should consider when purchasing a new or used car.

JD Power, for example, ranked Chevrolet as the fourth most reliable car manufacturer in 2024. Consumer reports Ranked the company 20th out of 30 manufacturers in 2023 regarding reliability. It’s no wonder drivers are confused about purchasing one of these models or looking for a car from a different manufacturer. Looking at specific models in terms of the cost of ownership may help them determine which path they should take.

Chevy Trax

Many consider the Chevy Trax an affordable vehicle. Its manufacturer-suggested retail price runs in the upper 20s, and this crossover SUV offers good fuel efficiency. Chevy began making this model in 2015 so drivers can better understand how much it would cost them to maintain the vehicle over its lifespan. According to reports, a driver will spend an estimated $859.50 each year maintaining and repairing this vehicle. Over 10 years, that’s more than $8,500. What exactly does this mean? A Chevy Trax owner will spend approximately 32% of the total sales price and maintenance repairs if they keep the vehicle for 10 years.

Chevy Spark

Countless drivers today wanted some subcompact vehicle, and the Chevy Spark fits the bill. This vehicle has a starting price of approximately $16,000, making it affordable to many drivers. However, they must consider the total cost of ownership. Once they do, a person might decide to choose another vehicle. The average person will spend around $6,000 over 10 years in maintenance and repair fees. That equals approximately 37% of the initial asking price. When determining whether to buy this vehicle, a driver should budget $22,000 rather than $16,000 because that is the actual cost of ownership without insurance or gas. Some drivers will find it acceptable as they will not keep the car for 10 years. Others find they need to choose a different model.

Chevy Malibu

The Malibu is also known for having issues. Transmission problems have plagued this car, often before reaching 100,000 miles. The transmission needs to be replaced rather than rebuilt, and a person will pay approximately $3,500 to complete this job. However, the transmission is only one concern with this model. Engine and fuel system issues have been reported. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that over 50% of complaints about the 2018 Malibu concern the engine and fuel system. Other problems reported with this model include speed control issues, stalled engines, and poor fuel economy. Sadly, many of these issues occur within the first 10,000 miles of driving this machine.

Common Chevy Problems

Other Chevy models are also known for having issues. The 2015 Colorado has transmission and engine issues, which can be costly. The Chevy Silverado continues to receive high ratings, but it also has common problems that can be costly to repair. For example, the four-wheel drive transfer case position sensor or selector switch regularly fails in this model. When a driver has trouble shifting gears, it may be a sign that this switch has gone bad. They cannot get up to speed, and the engine may be damaged because of this failing switch. If caught early, the repair isn’t expensive. Sadly, If a driver fails to notice these warning signs, the vehicle’s transmission, drive shafts, and axles may be damaged.

Individuals may choose to purchase a Chevrolet. If they know that they are looking at repairs in the future, they can budget for the repairs and have a car they love and want to drive every day. This is a personal decision that they need to make. However, anyone purchasing a Chevrolet will need a good mechanic with a proven track record in fixing these known issues. The right mechanic will inspect the car every time it comes in for service and look for potential problems so they can be addressed before they become costly repairs. This individual will be priceless for the owner of a Chevy vehicle.
