6 Things to Invest In for Your Family This Year

Every day brings a fresh start for connecting with your family and supporting each person’s physical and emotional wellbeing. The start of a new year is the perfect opportunity to reconsider your goals and how well your family is reaching them.

Start the new year strong by finding practical ways to help your family grow. Here are six things you can do to invest in your family this year.

1. Eat Quality Nutrition

The way people fuel their bodies directly affects their mental and physical health. One of the most impactful things you can do for your family this year is to encourage healthy nutritional habits. You can start by cutting any foods with excess sugar, salt, or preservatives out of your grocery list and pantry.

Encouraging your kids to eat whole vegetables and fruits instead of carb-heavy meals will give them the nutrients they need to grow and flourish. Of course, you can’t change your dietary habits overnight. Instead, try implementing one step at a time until your family’s diet is aligned with your high hopes for their futures.

2. Declutter Your Life

Some studies suggest that clutter increases stress and reduces focus. In other words, owning an excessive amount of things can actually start to take up brain space as well as physical space in your home. You may not realize how much weight clutter was bringing to your life until you start to clean things out.

Decluttering will shorten your cleaning routines and can help you develop a minimalist mindset, which will benefit your budget. In addition, you can use this process to teach your kids how to relate to material objects in a healthy way. Other than the objects themselves, there’s really nothing you can lose by decluttering.

3, Prioritize Rest

Resting is essential for a full life. This year, start taking your need for rest seriously. For some families, that might mean getting more sleep or incorporating afternoon naps into your schedule. To embrace a slower life pace, you may need to quit excess activities or reduce your hours at work.

If you or someone in your family is a full-time caregiver, ensure they get a break. There are many highly-regarded, supportive programs that can encourage and inspire aging adults while giving caregivers a day to recover. Don’t wait until burnout to get the emotional and physical support you need.

4. Embrace the Outdoors

Time in nature refreshes and inspires people like nothing else. Children especially benefit from a lot of time outside where they can move their bodies and use their imaginations to engage with the natural world. Although it may initially feel unproductive, time spent outside is a powerful investment in your family’s health.

Adults also reap big benefits from time spent outside. Research suggests that even seeing a picture of nature at work can reduce stress levels, so imagine the impact on your health of spending more hours outside. You can easily make this a family affair by going to a park, visiting the zoo, or taking older kids on a short hike.

5. Take a Tech Fast

In the modern world, technology is the go-to for work and personal life. However, spending excess time scrolling or working on screens takes a toll on your body and mind. Some studies suggest that LED lights can lead to depression and ADHD symptoms in children, in addition to the toll on their posture.

You can model healthy boundaries for your family by committing to a short or long-term technology fast. Try limiting your screen time to one hour a day or cutting it out altogether for a period of time. Give yourself and your kids other options for how to spend their time, and watch their responses. Even if you choose to increase tech use again, you’ll have a better idea of how it’s affecting your family.

6. Go On a Date

If you and your spouse are raising kids while working full-time jobs, going on a date is a valuable investment in your family. While dates may not look the same after having kids, they give you space to focus on each other and plan for the future.

Individuals with strong marriages can give more to their kids because they’re investing time into their primary supportive relationship. Parents can only work as a supportive team if they’re on the same page, and they can’t stay on the same page without time to talk and recuperate from their busy schedules. While it may feel counterintuitive, quality time with your spouse is essential for a healthy, happy home.

Results Take Time

Like all investments, returns on your choices will take time to show up in your family. The initial reaction to eating less sugar and having less TV time might be negative rather than positive. However, as habits change over time, attitudes and tastes will too.

Have patience and remember that each choice you make is an investment in your family’s future. You can start with these six steps to cultivate a happy, healthy family dynamic.  Even taking one step in the right direction will lead to huge returns down the road.
