6 easy ways to decorate your child’s bedroom
When it comes to decorating, there is no room more exciting than a child’s bedroom. I mean, where else do you get the opportunity to use fun colour palettes, unique pieces of furniture, and amazing wall art? Hint: nowhere. With kids rooms, you have freedom to get creative, to have fun with it, to get a bit silly and even go just a little bit overboard. But the thing is, you don’t want the room to look ridiculous and cluttered which is why I have outlined 6 easy ways to decorate your child’s bedroom, guaranteeing an amazing space full of fun and imagination.
1. Prioritise play
If you are anything like me, there’s a good chance that the thought of decorating your kids room got you a little bit excited. Ok — really excited, but hopefully you didn’t do what I did. I went out and bought an absurd amount of stuff that looked fantastic, but had very little utility. I mean, was my one year old daughter really going to use a decorative chair, a reading lamp, and a side table? No, definitely not.
A much better option is to design your room with play in mind. It should have a large open space in the middle of the room, with lots of things that your children will actually use against the walls. Things like drawing desks, doll houses, and toy boxes are perfect here. Every single time you are thinking about buying something for your kids room, you should ask yourself one very simple question: “will they play with this?” and, if the answer is “no” then put it back.

2. Build around a neutral color palette
My kids love bright colors. Like, I mean they really love bright colours. But the thing is, they wont forever which is why choosing a neural colour palette for the foundation of your kids room is a fantastic option. It will ensure that they never outgrow the room, making it suitable for the entire time they live at home.
This means most of your walls, furniture, and key pieces (rugs, curtains, and bedspreads) should by whites and greys. You can then provide splashes of color through things like rugs, cushions, and play mats — things that are affordable, and can be replaced easily as soon as your child tires of them.
3. Go for a chalkboard wall
I know heaps of people who have a feature wall in every room of their house — and don’t get me wrong, they all look fine but they aren’t all that fun. Which is why chalkboard paint is the perfect option. Instead of going for a feature wall using a bright splash of paint, why not opt for a feature wall that doubles as a chalkboard? Not only is it a massive point of difference that lifts the feeling of the room, but it doubles as something that your kids will actually use.
As a bonus, everytime you step into the room there will be some new ‘artwork’ on the wall — which is a pretty neat thing, really.

4. Hang a clock
I am a firm believer that every kids room should have a clock. First and foremost, they offer a nice feature object that draws the eye. With this, if they are bright and loud, then they will offer the perfect compliment to the neutral color palette we discussed above. Secondly (and much more importantly), they also provide a way to help your kids tell the time!
In modern day, we are inundated with digital clocks. In fact, I don’t even know if they still teach kids how to read analog clocks any more (I hope they do). So why not make sure you teach them at home? You can find a wonderful selection of wall clocks online with next-day delivery, right here in the UK.

5. Exhibit their artwork
How’s this for a money saving decoration hack? Instead of going out and buying fancy pictures for your kids room, simply hang up their artwork instead? I know, I know — genius. In all seriousness, there is something nice about seeing your kids pictures on the walls. It somehow makes the room feel vibrant and full of life, yet homely, at the same time.
A great way to do this is to hang a nice bit of twine against one of the bedroom walls. You can then hang your kids pictures up using pegs, creating a rotating wall of artwork that takes very little effort to change. Perfect!
6. Sneak in Storage Everywhere
Lastly, while you want to make your childs room as fun as possible, you also want to make it functional. This means choosing pieces of furniture that also serve as sneaky storage solutions. Two of my absolute favourite options are beds that have drawers in their base, and chests that double as drawing desks. These are great pieces of furniture that quickly become very handy as your kids start accumulating toys. And trust me when I say that over time your kids will accumulate an incredible amount of stuff — so make sure you have somewhere to hide it all!
There is nothing (and I mean nothing) more enjoyable than decorating a child’s bedroom — but you want to make sure you do it the right way. Start with a neutral colour palette and fun in mind. From here, layer in some pieces of furniture that also double as storage, select some clever decorations for the walls, and you are pretty much there.
And there you have it — a great looking room in 6 easy steps.
