10 Items I Always Carry When Traveling with My Kids

Traveling with kids is like assembling IKEA furniture—there’s excitement, frustration, and a high chance someone ends up crying (usually me). Over the years, I’ve learned that preparation is everything. These 10 items have become my trusty sidekicks, saving the day (and my sanity) time and time again. Think of this as your survival kit for traveling with tiny humans.

  1. Snacks Galore (Because “Hangry” Kids Are Scary)

If there’s one universal truth about kids, it’s this: they’re always hungry. Snacks are my secret weapon to combat meltdowns, boredom, and impromptu arguments over absolutely nothing. My bag is like a snack bar on wheels—granola bars, crackers, fruit pouches, and, yes, the occasional bribery treat.

Pro tip: Portion them out ahead of time in reusable pouches. This avoids the chaos of a full bag of popcorn spilling everywhere (been there, cried over that). Snacks don’t just keep them happy; they keep me sane. Nothing derails a trip faster than an “I’m hungry” scream 10 minutes after lunch.

  1. Reusable Water Bottles (Stay Hydrated or Face the Wrath)

Thirsty kids are cranky kids, and cranky kids… well, let’s just say they’re not fun travel companions. Reusable water bottles with spill-proof lids are a must. Bonus points if the bottle has a fun design—they’ll drink more just because it’s “cool.”

I’ve also learned to carry a spare empty bottle because, inevitably, someone loses theirs. Having water on hand prevents those “Mom, I need a drink right NOW!” moments in the middle of nowhere. Trust me, your future self will thank you.

  1. Sneaker Cleaner Foam (Because Mud Happens)

Kids are like magnets for dirt. Whether we’re exploring a trail or walking through a suspiciously sticky theme park, their shoes end up looking like they’ve been through a war zone. Enter: sneaker cleaner foam. It’s compact, easy to use, and makes shoes look presentable again with minimal effort.

A quick scrub in the parking lot or hotel lobby, and voila—clean shoes! Plus, it keeps the car floor and hotel carpet from turning into a mud museum. And if you’re the kind of parent who secretly loves TikTok cleaning videos (guilty), this is oddly satisfying to use.

  1. Portable First Aid Kit (A Bandage Fixes Everything, Apparently)

Kids have a talent for getting injured at the worst times. Whether it’s a scraped knee or an unexpected encounter with a cactus (don’t ask), a first aid kit is essential. Mine’s stocked with bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers, plus fun character-themed band-aids for instant smiles.

I keep it small enough to fit in my carry-on, so it’s always within reach. Pro tip: add some motion sickness remedies. There’s nothing worse than realizing too late that road trip + twisty roads = disaster.

  1. Activity Kits (AKA: Sanity Savers)

Long flights or road trips without entertainment? Hard pass. I pack small activity kits tailored to my kids’ ages—coloring books, stickers, and travel-sized games for the little ones; puzzles and books for the older ones. The trick? Include something they’ve never seen before. The novelty keeps them engaged longer.

These kits are lifesavers during delays, layovers, and “boring” dinners out. They also dramatically reduce the “Are we there yet?” chorus, which is worth its weight in gold.

  1. Wet Wipes (Because Kids Are Basically Sticky Tornadoes)

I don’t leave the house without wet wipes. EVER. They’re the MVP of mess management—sticky hands, spilled juice, airplane tray tables that look like science experiments, you name it. I even use them for a quick wipe-down of toys that mysteriously end up on the bathroom floor (ew).

Biodegradable or sensitive-skin wipes are a great choice if you’re using them constantly. Bonus: they double as makeshift coolers for sweaty little faces during hot days.

  1. Travel-Sized Toiletries (Familiarity = Comfort)

Hotel toiletries are hit or miss, and kids aren’t exactly fans of change. I pack travel-sized versions of their favorite shampoo, lotion, and toothpaste. It’s a small thing, but it keeps bedtime routines consistent, which helps everyone settle in faster.

Don’t forget a mini bottle of hand sanitizer—it’s become a non-negotiable item for tackling public surfaces or post-bathroom emergencies when there’s no soap in sight.

  1. Spare Clothes (Murphy’s Law Applies to Kids)

Anything that can go wrong with kids’ clothing probably will. Spills, accidents, unexpected puddle-jumping—spare clothes are a must. I pack lightweight outfits for each child and stash them in zippered pouches. Bonus: throw in a reusable bag for the soiled clothes to avoid stinking up the rest of your stuff.

Even if nothing catastrophic happens (rare), they’re great for weather changes or delayed luggage. It’s a small addition that saves a ton of stress.

  1. Compact Blanket (Warmth, Comfort, and Fort-Building Potential)

Travel blankets are the unsung heroes of family trips. They’re great for chilly planes, impromptu picnics, or creating a cozy nap spot in noisy airports. I prefer lightweight, foldable options that can fit into a backpack or attach to a stroller.

For younger kids, it’s also a comfort item that makes unfamiliar environments feel a little more like home. Plus, you never know when you’ll need to shield a sleeping child from bright lights—or use it as a superhero cape in a pinch.

  1. Power Bank (Because Dead Devices = Mutiny)

Screen time is a lifesaver, especially on long journeys. But nothing kills the vibe faster than a dead tablet mid-episode. A power bank is my travel must-have to keep devices (and kids) running smoothly. Look for one with multiple ports so you can charge several gadgets at once.

It’s not just for the kids, either—between navigation apps, snapping travel photos, and checking reservations, my phone would be toast without it. A fully charged power bank is the ultimate insurance policy against meltdowns.

The Wrap Up: Preparedness Is Bliss

Traveling with kids doesn’t have to feel like a scene from a disaster movie. With these 10 essentials in your arsenal, you’ll be ready for anything—spills, boredom, or even an impromptu mud bath. Packing smartly means more time for fun and fewer “Oh no!” moments. So grab your bags, wrangle the kids, and enjoy the adventure—chaos and all!
