The Naked Truth with Canesten

When Canesten asked me to take party in their The Naked Truth campaign my initial reaction was that I couldn’t possibly take part and discuss something so “embarrassing” on my blog. And then I realised that, actually, I’m a grown adult, with five children, and discussing women’s intimate health is far from embarrassing and is actually just a fact of life. As a Mum I want to bring my children up to know that they can always talk to me about intimate health conditions, and so that’s how I came to be sat here, increasing awareness around intimate health conditions for both men and women, and a reminder to all of you that this is far from embarrassing.

It’s interesting that when I mentioned I was writing this blog post to my girlfriends, their first reaction was, “So you’re basically writing a blog post about thrush?”. And whilst that is indeed one of the intimate health conditions which 75% of women will experience in their lifetime, there are actually many other intimate health conditions, commonly diagnosed, and yet spoken about far less.

And I guess this is why we need to familiarise ourselves with the symptoms of these conditions in order to ensure we are receiving the correct treatment for the right condition. Many women mistake other infections for thrush and yet the two are treated very differently which can actually lead to worsening symptoms when the incorrect treatment is given.

The Canesten site has produced a wide variety of information concerning intimate health concerns and I am sharing with you three of the most common so we can normalise these discussions, raise awareness of signs and symptoms, and hopefully lead to more of us receiving the correct treatments.

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis is actually the most common cause of vaginal infection in women of childbearing age and yet I’ll be honest, I knew very little about it. Fortunately I have never suffered with it and yet, despite the scary name, it is actually very common and easily treated.

Fortunately there are ways you can avoid Bacterial Vaginosis, such as –

• Avoid using deodorants and perfumed products in and around your intimate area• Avoid over-washing
• Avoid using strong detergent to wash your underwear
• Change your tampons or pads frequently
• Ensure you wipe from front to back after going to the toilet
• Dry your vaginal area after washing, swimming and working out
• Change your underwear after swimming and working out

Thrush

Thrush is a very common vaginal yeast infection which is basically an inflammation of your vagina. Both fungus and bacteria naturally live in your vagina, but if the fungus Candida albicans increases, it causes thrush. This fungus may increase when your immune system is weak or for me, when I take antibiotics! It’s something I expect with every course I’m on and a really rather uncomfortable side effect for me.

There are many ways we can avoid thrush such as –

    • Avoid using deodorants and perfumed products in and around your intimate area (see below for more details)
    • Avoid stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle, doing so will keep your immune system strong
    • Avoid high-sugar foods
    • If you are taking antibiotics, consult your doctor before taking thrush treatments
    • Change your tampons or pads frequently
    • Ensure you wipe from front to back after going to the toilet
    • Change your underwear after swimming and working out
    • Avoid very hot baths

Cystitis

Ahh Cystitis, my arch nemesis! I can handle many things but honestly, cystitis is horrendous! The medical name given to an inflammation of the bladder, cystitis affects up to 40% of women and can leave you feeling the need to urinate more often, suffering from uncomfortable or painful urination, and generally mot great at all!

Some tips to avoid cystitis include –

  • Good hygiene helps to prevent bacteria from travelling up the urethra and into the bladder, which can help prevent cystitis.
  • Change your tampons or pads frequently
  • Wash your vagina with warm water and gentle products e.g. Canesfresh Gentle
  • Refreshing Mousse
  • Ensure you wipe from front to back after going to the toilet
  • If you’re having sex, follow these precautions to help prevent cystitis from recurring
  • • Empty your bladder fully after sex
  • Avoid having sex until your cystitis clears up
  • Consider changing contraceptives if you use a diaphragm

Information on Symptoms and Treatment of cystitis can be found on the Canesten website.

I found the information on the Canesten website hugely informative and it really opened my eyes about the importance of knowing the signs and symptoms of intimate health conditions so to treat them correctly.

Fortunately for us, brands such as Canesten, the number one brand in women’s intimate health, offer solutions for all of these conditions as well as easy to use, every day products. I know that I have dashed to the pharmacist for these treatments on countless occasions, or popped them in my shopping trolley when doing the weekly shop. There is no shame in suffering with any of these infections and the most important thing is simply to treat them correctly.
