MG Mum vs Dad: 4 tips for driving with kids!

We were recently challenged by MG to ask the children a series of questions to decipher who is the better driver Mum or Dad and the results were interesting to say the least!! You can read the end results here but for us it was a tie with Megan saying Daddy and Harry saying Mummy! In all honesty I was shocked they didn’t both say Daddy as when we travel as a family he does all of the driving (unless there’s a party and then it’s always my turn to drive, strange that!).

With four children (and a dog) our car journeys aren’t always as straightforward as I would like, even more so when we travel and we can be in the car together for hours at a time. Whilst things have definitely got easier in some ways the older the children have grown, they’ve always become far more vocal the minute they get bored, tired, hungry or need the toilet! We’ve had to learn the hard way how to keep the kids entertained and I thought I’d share our top five tops for driving with kids.

1. Snacks

If there is one tip I can share with you for driving with kids, it’s snacks. All the snacks. In my experience as long as the children have food and drinks they’re happy and I would far rather vacuum up crisp crumbs from the floor of the car than listen to them whinge for the entire duration of every trip!

2. Safety first

I know from experience that driving with kids can easily lead to distractions so having a car with safety features is paramount. 3. Play music 

We always make sure we have our song list ready for car journeys, trying to get a mix of music Eva, Megan and Harry will enjoy but also Lewis who, at sixteen, has very different music tastes! 4. Screen time 

Although I am a huge advocate of limiting screen time for the children, when it comes to driving I am more than happy for them to have their iPads or use our mobile phones to play games. It keeps them happy (and quiet!) and also means that their daily screen time isn’t impeding on the rest of our day when we arrive at our destination.
