Why You Should Be a Lifelong Learner

If you are serious about living your best life and doing as much with your time on the planet as possible, then being s lifelong learner is something you should aspire to.

So many of us think that once we have graduated from school or university, our learning years are behind us, and although we will still take things like employee training seriously because it helps companies to be more productive and us to progress our careers, we tend to stop making time for learning like we used to.

The thing is, lifelong learning has so many benefits for us both in our careers and in our private lives, that we should all be making a bit more effort to learn something new every day if we can.

Not convinced? Below are some of the very real life benefits of being a lifelong learner:

It’s great for brain health

One of the biggest reasons why you should aim to keep on learning as much as you can throughout your life is that it is good for brain health. The more challenges you give your brain, and the more active your mind is over the years, the better your cognitive function is likely to be now and as you get older. Dementia and Alzheimers are diseases we cannot completely prevent, but the greater our brains are worked out, the lower the chances are that we will suffer from memory loss and cognitive decline in later years.

It gives you more opportunities in life

It is fair to say that the more you know, the better your opportunities are in life. When you are constantly learning new skills and information, you make yourself more valuable to employers; you make it easier to be successful in your chosen career or business; you are able to make more connections that other people are not, which will enable you to do things in life that other people have not even thought about doing. Learning will make you able to do more and be more – it really is that simple.

It makes you more interesting

If you want to be that person who people always gravitate towards at parties and events, then lifelong learning is a good habit to get into. The more books you read, the more documentaries you watch, and the more skills you learn, then the more interesting your conversations will be. Not only will you be able to start a conversation with anyone, no matter what their interests might be, but you will also be able to hold your own when just about any topic you can think of is brought up at those dinner parties and conferences, which will mean people enjoy your company more. This is great for your personal life, but it is also good for your career development or business life too.

It can help you to meet new people

Something that lifelong learning can also do very well is enabling you to meet new people. Taking up an art class or heading to a talk about local history at the library will put you in a room with tons of other people who have similar interests and a love of lifelong learning. They won’t all become your friends, but if you get involved and strike up a conversation or two, it is an excellent way to make lots of new connections which is really important for your wellbeing because loneliness, especially as you get older, can be really bad for your physical and mental health.

It can lead to self-fulfilment

When we take the time to learn as much as we can about the world around us, we learn a lot about ourselves in the process; we learn what we are capable of; we learn what we are really interested in in life; we learn what really matters to us, and we can put this knowledge to good use to become self-actualised and more fulfilled than we ever imagined possible. The power of knowledge is a power like no other and it is available to us at all times at our fingertips, so why not make good use of it?

It’s a productive use of your spare time

Last, but not least, it is fair to say that lifelong learning is an excellent use of your spare time. We all need some downtime to just flop out in front of Netflix and relax, but if that’s all we ever do, we are wasting so much time that could be better used learning how to make our blogging businesses better, advance our careers, write that amazing novel we have in our heads, or…well the options are endless.

It helps us to stay motivated

On a related note, because lifelong learning keeps us busy rather than allowing us to get lazy, it can help us to stay on the path of motivation. After all, it’s much harder to be motivated to do the things in life we need to when we are naturally a little bit lazy and prone to taking the easy option. However, when we are used to making an effort to engage our brains and boost ur skills, doing so when we have to – when we need to take a work-related course to get a promotion for example – we will find it much easier to do what needs to be done when it needs to be fone and this is a powerful skill to have in its own right.

As you can see, being a lifelong learner can enrich your life in so many ways that we should all be doing more of it and encouraging our kids to have the same mindset too, and thanks to the internet, and all o the amazing online courses you can take for free, it has never been easier to take up lifelong learning for your own wellbeing even if you do not have a particular skill you need to acquire for work or a particular exam you need to study for.
