Why a custom size bed is good for you
Thousands and thousands of people in the UK are over 6ft, which is pretty tall! And most of these people will be sleeping in an average sized UK bed. But this could actually be detrimental to our bodies mental and physical health.
There are a lot of advantages to being tall, like being able to reach the high snack cupboard in your kitchen, being able to get a view of your surroundings, or being able to change a lightbulb without a ladder.
But one of the biggest disadvantages of being tall could be that you are not sleeping in the right sized bed, and this could be causing physical and mental health issues.
If you find that you need to toss and turn throughout the night to get comfortable, its not because you are fussy! It’s probably because you have the wrong sized bed and mattress.
If you have a custom-size bed, it will feel supportive and you will get a long and restful night’s sleep, whether you are on your back, side or front.
Weakened immune system
Not having the right size bed and mattress can also affect your overall wellbeing and immune system. If you are having sleepless night due to your bed set-up, this will lead to the weakening of your immune system. When you are tired, it is harder for your body to fight of illnesses. When you are asleep, your body releases proteins called cytokines which help promote sleep and helps fight of inflation and infection. Without sleep, there will be a decrease of these important, protective, proteins.
Premature ageing
Lack of sleep caused by the wrong sized mattress could also lead to premature ageing. If your uncomfortable mattress and bed are keeping you awake at night, it could affect your skin I the short and long term.
In a study by cosmetics company Estee Lauder, woman that slept through the night had the youngest looking skin. However, woman that failed to get a good night’s sleep, were more likely to show signs of ageing.
Loss of libido
The less you sleep the more likely it is that your sex drive will be low. Research has shown that lack of sleep has a negative effect on libido and that men could produce lower levels of testosterone.
Struggling to breath
A common night-time breathing disorder is called obstructive sleep apnea, and this can interrupt your sleep and lower sleep quality. But this respiratory issue is more likely to occur if you have sleep deprivation through a bad bed and mattress. If you toss and turn most nights, and find yourself laying awake, then you could be more vulnerable to respiratory infections like the common cold and flu.
Cardiovascular system
If your bed and mattress is causing you to lose sleep, you could also be at risk of impacting your heart and blood health. How well you sleep determines how well your heart and blood vessels works, including how healthy your blood sugars, blood pressure and inflammation levels are.
People who get less hours of sleep a night may be more at risk of getting a cardiovascular disease.
So, if you are struggling to sleep at night, it’s important to consider the quality of your bed frame and mattress. If you are sleep on a mattress that is uncomfortable and too short in length for you, then this could be the cause of your bad sleeps.
