These Are The 3 Things To Not Do So Your Knives Last Longer

You don’t have to be a chef or an aspiring chef to want to have good knives in the kitchen. A good knife is going to make cooking more pleasurable since doing the essential prep work is made easier. Chopping and cutting takes far less time when you have good knives. The problem that many people have when it comes to knives is knowing how to take care of them.

There are a lot of things that people do that actually ruin their knives without them even realizing it. When you understand these things then you realize that you need to stop so you can take better care of your knives. Taking care of your knives will have them last much longer and help you be a better home cook. In this article, we will go over several things to avoid.

1 – Letting the knives get dull

A dull knife is one of the most dangerous things you can have in the kitchen. This is because when it is dull you have to use more force to get it to cut. A little too much force and you go through the thing you’re cutting and it goes right into your hand.

Keeping your knives sharp is essential so that you can stay safe and so that your work is easier in the kitchen. A sharp knife cuts through meat like butter and allows you to chop vegetables in less time. This makes cooking less of a chore so you can be a better home cook.

You can also shop for Damascus chef knives, which are known for their sharpness and durability. These knives are created by folding layers of steel together, creating a stunning and strong blade that will make all your cooking tasks easier.

Get a knife sharpener to make sure that at the first sign that they are dull, you can take a few moments to sharpen them up. This will help them last longer so you can also get more out of having them.

2 – Washing them in the dishwasher

Dishwasher soap has a much different composition than regular dish soap. There are a lot more harsh chemicals in it combined with the high heat of the machine that will ruin your knives. The edge will certainly be much duller after the first wash. Then, after successive washes it could also get ruined under the handle.

For instance, if the handle cracks if it is made of wood or some other material, then water will get under it. This will then begin the corrosion process that compromises the entire knife.

3 – Using the wrong cutting board

There are a lot of cutting boards for sale that are not great at their intended purpose. That is, they are built for looks and perform poorly as an actual board on which you can cut and chop things.

For instance, there are glass cutting boards available that will destroy the blade of your knife. The same goes for material like granite or marble. They may all look nice but you are ruining your knife by using one.

The key is to get a cutting board that has a bit of give for the edge. Wood is the most common of them but a shortcoming is that it can’t be put into the dishwasher. Plastic or resin is also a good option since it can be washed in the machine.
