Prioritising yourself: Best ways to practice self-love
The self-care arena has become one that a lot of women have become interested in. With busy family lives, hectic work schedules, and not enough hours in the day, women often find themselves burnt out and unhappy.
Incorporating self-care into your daily life can have a huge impact. Not only will your mental health thrive, but your physical health will too. Here are some tips to help you prioritise self-love.
Nurturing your body
Part of self-love is taking care of your physical health. This can be done in many ways, including balanced nutrition, adequate exercise, and getting a good night’s sleep.
It may be overwhelming to make lots of changes at once, so start with one area and focus on that until you feel comfortable. Remember to listen to your body’s needs, though. If you increase your exercise and feel your body needs a day off, then do so.
Cultivating mindfulness
As well as your physical health, your mental health needs support too. Mindfulness is practicing being present in the moment and enjoying it without negative thoughts intruding.
Mindfulness can be achieved through different techniques; just try them out and see which works for you. Meditation is a popular choice, as is completing deep breathing exercises. You could combine the two for 20 minutes in the morning and evening to help prepare for the day and wash away residual stresses.
Setting boundaries
Protecting your energy and wellbeing can be tough, especially when navigating personal and professional relationships.
If you are struggling with difficult personalities or saying no to people, it is time to set some boundaries. It feels weird at first—going against your instinct to help—but protecting yourself is worth it. Practice some phrases you can use in uncomfortable situations in the privacy of your home. You can then refer to these when you need them.
Embracing self-care rituals
Take some time each day to do something that is purely for yourself. Make sure it is something that you enjoy, so you could set aside some time to read or listen to music.
If you need to relax, why not set up a luxurious bath time? Incorporating candles with relaxing scents such as lavender not only creates a dim but warm atmosphere but also helps your body to relax.
Treating yourself is also important to maintaining a good level of self-care. If you’ve had your eye on a new gorgeous bra, allow yourself to get it and feel amazing wearing it!
Challenging negative self-talk
The voice in your head can be a powerful force, and unfortunately, it can be a negative one. Letting negative thoughts take hold is detrimental to your mental wellbeing.
Before you can start to change this pattern of thinking, you need to be aware of it happening. Tune into your internal dialogue and start identifying negative self-talk.
Incorporate positive affirmations into your day. You could even mentally repeat them while you brush your teeth! By repeating them regularly as well as when negative thoughts take over, you will create a mantra to give yourself more confidence.
