Planning the Perfect Holiday in Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands in Spain and an incredibly popular holiday destination, thanks to its mild climate, stunning scenery and extensive variety of things to see and do. If you’re thinking of heading to Tenerife for your next holiday, here’s how to plan your perfect trip.

What Type of Holiday Are You Looking For?

First, you should consider what type of holiday you are looking for. Tenerife is a great destination for all types of breaks, whether you’re planning a family holiday, a romantic getaway or a girls’ trip, there’s something for everyone.

If you want to make the most of the nightlife, you’ll want to choose a lively resort like Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje or the island’s capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife. For a more chilled trip, choose a quieter spot like Puerto de Santiago, Puerto de la Cruz, Los Cristianos or Los Gigantes.

You’ll also need to decide on how long you will plan to stay, with most holidaymakers visiting for at least 7-10 days to make the most of what the island has to offer.

Book Well in Advance

You can travel to Tenerife by ferry from the south coast of Spain or fly into Tenerife. The island has two airports – Tenerife North Airport (Los Rodeos) and Tenerife South Airport (Reina-Sofía). There are daily flights from several UK airports. For a stress-free trip, you should book your plane tickets well in advance to get them for the best possible price. It’s a good idea to pre-book your airport transfers too.

Choose Your Accommodation

When it comes to places to stay in Tenerife, you’re spoiled for choice. You can pick from a selection of options, including all-inclusive resorts, luxury hotels, self-catering apartments, as well as Airbnbs and villas with pools.

To help you decide, think about the type of holiday experience you want and who will be going with you. Do you want evening entertainment and kids clubs? Or do you want to experience authentic Tenerife away from the busy resorts? Also, think about whether there are any must-have essentials like a pool or a balcony that you want from your accommodation.

Plan Your Activities

Knowing what you want to see and do will help you plan your trip and ensure you don’t forget anything. Here are some unmissable things you might want to include in your itinerary.

Mount Teide

Located in Teide National Park, Mount Teide is the highest point in Spain and an active volcano. You can take a guided evening tour and watch the sunset or take a cable car right up to the summit.

Masca

Masca is a tiny village tucked away in a valley, where residents of Tenerife used to hide inland from pirates. You’ll need a hire car to get there but the spectacular views won’t disappoint.

San Cristobal de la Laguna

This picturesque town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts historic buildings and beautiful courtyards alongside shops and tapas bars.

Get out on the water

Tenerife has many beautiful beaches and as an island, there’s no shortage of things to do out on the open water. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can go whale and dolphin watching or make the most of the crystal clear waters by going swimming, snorkelling, kayaking or sailing.

Eat your fill

Spain is famous for its mouthwatering cuisine so when you’ve decided which area you’ll be visiting, be sure to look up the best bars and restaurants to visit. You should also check out small, local family-run taverns during your stay in Tenerife and enjoy the wonderful hospitality and delicious food.
